you come on here asking a bunch of 928 owners which one is better, you are going to get a pretty standard responce, get the 928.

However that being said if you arent familiar with the cars get a PPI (Per purchase inspection) BEFORE you commit to it!

Drive them both. The 840 is a dog compared to the 928. Hell, the 850 is a dog compared to the GT.

That will answer your question.

This is like asking Rosie O'donnell if she likes boys or girls, you already know the answer before you even asked.

The 840 is a sexy slow car. The 928 is a sexy express train. Buy them both.

The 928 weighs less and has more horsepower. The 928 has bigger brakes and a more sophisticated suspension. The 928's only mechanical drawback is the timing belt (as compared to the BMW, which uses a chain). IMO the timing belt is easy to change. The early BMW 4L v8 had problems with the nickel coated cylinders and high sulfur fuel. BMWs are great cars, but Porsche knows how to make great sport cars.

Buy the BMW and tell me where the 928 is......

Also, judging by the responses in the thread I'm guessing most have never driven an 840.

IMO a stock 928 is sluggish

For their size (the BMW) they haul pretty damn good though (that was my point, probably should have said that).

Get the 928 I test drove a 850CSI not long ago black with white interior exceptional car ,kinda like the 928 ,but not really my cup of tea the looks were boring and the power wasn't the best the V12 didn't sound as good as I expected very boxy in my opinion. Get a 928S4 and a 80's BMW 6 Series they were such beautiful cars!!

Get the 840.
It's a BIG cruiser.
Might bring some heartburn. Not sure how much of a 97 BMW 12.5K will get you.

The 840/850 were a lot more expensive when I looked at them 7 years ago.

Joe, I emailed you a pdf copy of a November 1992 Car and Driver article GTS vs 850. Might help you with your decision.

wow Rich, i Cant say thank you enough. That really pushed me to the porsche. I mean it. Thank you.
I'll be honest with all of you before I even read the article, i was thinking how I would be almost happy with either car... and then i started inking about all the porsche people I've spoken to in the last three days and all the warm emails and help. WHAT A GREAT BUNCH OF GUYS I THOUGHT. I mean really great. I belong to 4 other clubs and you guys really rank high. To all of you THANK YOU for your expensive wisdom and crisp guidance. Joe Cat- Now I sleep or should i say, finish the night by looking at the 928 wheel ****. I CAN'T FREAGIN' WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
