Go for it! It looks good on the outside and there are lots of mods you can do to the engine to boost performance. At $800.00 you can't lose.

The wheels are worth the $800 entry fee... If you decide to sell the car I'll take your wheels! This will be a fun project for you, but don't be to surprised about costs. Everything on a 928 is pretty expensive...though EVERYTHING is readily available too, and you usually have the choice of new or used on most all parts as well!

We have a GREAT group of sponsor here! 928 International, 928 Specialists, and 928sRus! All GREAT FOLKS to deal with. You can't go wrong with any of them. We also have 928 Motorsports, but I have not done any business with them at this point, but I understand good folks there too.

Yeah, where is it? For $1300 it'd be worth the fun ofupsetting my car-hating professor neighbors by parking it in the street in front of the house....

fuel system (CIS) will be near $2K to get running

rust in the quarter windows......expensive--right front fender has issues, too

redo interior--find a donor or cheap upholstery shop (Tijuana comes to mind)

what trans is it...? Auto = leaks and not as good as the 4-speed slushbox, 5-speed is maybe OK, but may need syncro's or.....?

Unless you've got parts for an early car like I do.....leave this to some one else or part it out.

If you part it, you'll still have stuff that won't sell and will be off to the crusher when you get tired of looking at it.

That's a good point, and what you put into it to get it "right" can quickly exceed its ultimate value as a whole. Regardless of how much $ you put into this, you'll never get it to a concours high dollar car.
On the other hand, immediately parting it doesn't give you any insight into the 928 experience. Sounds to me like you're looking for that experience & not simply an opportunity to double your money. You've got a terrific opportunity here and a solid starting point.
I'd establish a $ cap toward fixing this up, the whole time keeping what JHowell says in mind. Go after the mechanical stuff first & put off the costly things that aren't absolutely necessary to get it running & reliable, like paint and interior.
That expense can always be justified later after you know what you've got and started to get attached to the car. If it's not too bad off mechanically, you might get to that point sooner than later. If you find a major mechanical problem, then you go the parts route w/out too much pain and $uffering.
You're right about the sound of these cars. All generations of 928s have the most gratifying engine sound that can satisfy at least some of the yearning for more power.

Come on you guys, I had nothing but good intentions in offering to help scout it I certainly don't have the time, money or facilities to snake this thing from him and do it myself.

That's OK...notice how I haven't posted the location of said 928 for the vultures quite yet?

I'm quite curious...what made up the difference in power output between the US-spec S (234hp) and the Euro S (300hp) in 1983? I know the engine at that point received electronic fuel inj (in 1980, but power did not go up) and it was 4.7L in displacement (which is not much)...so not counting the extra 0.2L, what's holding back the 220hp model from nearing the 300hp mark??

If the body is good... this cars needs a rebuilt 84-86 Euro motor (3-5k?), new tranny, post MY84 (2-3K), and a Rob Budd interior (5K).
So, for 15K you would have a fast, reliable, and comfortable ride.

Then you could dial in the details on a yearly basis, ie. new radiator, shocks, brakes, clutch, etc. (2K per year min.)

In five years or so, you would have a nicely restored, tastfully updated, lightweight (relatively), powerful... 25K all in.

At that point, if you decide to sell it, 10-12K.

This has got to be a funny story. CIS engine with that much dirt in a car that was made to look like an S4?

10-4. The compression is easily handled by shaving the heads when they're out for a rebuilt and port work. And I found the difference in cam specs...Web sells the euro cams for 950 a set. It's a substantial difference (US cams were .398 lift and 233 duration; Euro grind was .471/.432 lift and 250/236 duration!).

Couple that with a nice exhaust (and it's almost smog exempt too...who needs cats?! ) and I'm sure you're in the 285 range easily with the 2v 4.5L.

I know, right? I guess someone really cared for this car at some point...and besides, Porsches are notorious for being some of the most commonly "faked" cars around. Half of the mid-80's "911 Turbos" on the road are re-bodied 1970's N/A's.

I saw it all the time when I worked at Car Gallerie in Costa Mesa.

Rest assured that none of the SoCal crew would snipe this car out from under you (well, ok, I wouldn't....), that wouldn't be kosher.

Question: Is the smog exemption still rolling? I thought they'd locked it down at 1976, but hopefully not. If it's still rolling at 25 years, I only have 7 more years/ 3 more smogs, baby!
