Default Water Pump Replacement Question

I will be installing my new water pump tonight. Two questions :

- should I install the gasket dry or use some silicone or other sealant
- should the bolts/nuts be installed dry, with anti seize or locktite.

Thanks
Sean

I used sealant and anti-seize on all the WP bolts. Its an aluminum block so remember the torque is like 7lbs..much more and you'll strip the threads.

Good point Dean ! they do not need much you are just containing 14 lbs of pressure.

I put a few dabs of Hylomar on the pump face, smeared it really thin, then the gasket to the pump. I --ONLY-- put it on the pump side of the gasket, never on the block side. That way you can remove it someday.

Use new bolts for the pump, with anti-seize, so you stand a chance getting them out later. 7 lbs/ft is almost nothing, so be sure and get a real torque wrench or screwdriver that goes that low. I have a 1/4" drive poind-inch clicker that does the job nicely. That low setting is generally out of the accurate window on most 3/8" torque wrenches. Given the choice of the 3/8-drive clicker or nothing I would use the 3/8-drive. Just don't say to yourself that it doesn't seem tight enough at that setting. It really is that light of a touch. You'll quickly appreciate how too many WP bolts get stretched and soon broken when they are installed using the 'snug plus just a little' method so many 'mechanics' seem to employ.

Hi, I'm a new member here. When doing my water pump, the block had minor pitting so I used silicone there, but not the pump face itself. My reasoning for this was to fill in the pits and diminish further pitting, and of course the reconditioned pump face didn't need it so why use silicone. Thats what the gaskets for.
