Default Necessary to remove lower Rad hose to replace alternator?

Looks like a bolt sits right behind the hose, anyone know? Really need to get this replaced tonight but need it finished and running by Sunday a.m. Ho many bolts are there besides the adjustment one?

On my '85 there is one long through / pivot bolt that runs into the radiator hose. It makes it a pain but if you remove the tie that holds the the hose to the fan shroud and deflect the hose you can get the bolt out. The trick I found works to help on the install is to put a shorter bolt that is about the same size in from the back side to hold the alternator in place while you move the hose and get the bolt installed from the front side.

In addition to the pivot the part that the adjuster bolt threads into also needs to have a nut on the back side loosened.

.
Great advice.

I use a similar sized screw driver to hold it in place as I use one hand to pull the hose out of the way, and the other to guide the bolt in.

Agreed, it's a pain in the *** some times.

Make sure that the insert is flush with the alternator so it is easier to move it around the bracket.

Don't do what I did one day and think you had it all nice and tight, move the hands and the entire alternator falls on your forehead. That really sucks.

I got it without removing the hose. Rob Edwards made a run down here and gave me a hand getting it back up in place. Sure a lot easier with the second pair of hands. Had to loosen the shroud and move it in addition to the hose but got it. Went back together surprisingly easy.

I was thinking "what are they talking about" then I realized I always have the radiator out, because I have taken the alternator out three times, each time as part of the timing belt job.

So, I guess taking out the rad first makes the job pretty easy.

I need to change out my power steering hoses so it will have to drop again soon. I hope we have as good of luck the second time around.

+1 You shouldn't have to remove the lower radiator hose. I pulled the alternator to change my PS hoses due to a leak. I puzzled about how to get that bolt out, but with "squishing" the hose just a bit there was room for the bolt.

Wait until you have to put it back in. Thats where the real fun is.

Nevermind, looks like its already done.
