Question Bang then Engine Died

In a remote part of Corsica I had one disturbing moment: After overtaking a car accelerating to about 6000rpm in second, I came off the throttle as I approached a corner and there was a loud bang, followed by the engine dying. I didn't try to restart the car for some time, instead I chose to try to find the fault after pulling off the road. I suspected an electrical short, perhaps the alternator cable had been snagged. I turned the ignition to II and heard the clicking sound I get when my battery is flat, which also made me think of an electrical fault. I lifted the car and inspected the alternator cabling as best I could, but could find no damage. Perhaps it was the LH injector death rattle instead. If so then what was the bang?

In the end I decided to try to start the car and it fired up immediately and ran without problems from then on, but I really would like to know what caused the stomach churning bang...

can you please post on youtube.com and try to duplicate the "bang" sound. That will help a lot. Was it a bang or more of a pop?

We did take some video during the trip, and the camera had been running just before the bang, but not during, and it hasn't happened in the 1500 miles since.

I will try to upload some video from the trip, as soon as I work out the most effecient way to rotate the images 180deg as the camera was suspended upside down. Streamclip doesn't work with the format produced by the Sureshot SD750, and VirtualDub doesn't compress after rotating, so any advice welcome.

You didn't unknowingly hit the rev limiter while at the same time coming off of the gas did you? I don't know if that would cause a car to die though .

When you put your blower on, you didn't swap out any of the original electronics for Lucas parts did you?

Sometimes when Kevin gets off the gas quickly under boost (85 Euro 16v), and is just feathering the gas, he'll get a loud backfire from built up gas in the exhaust.

Although the car never dies. But it doesn't seem to hurt anything either.

Maybe you have a fuel problem of some sort.

Don't know if this helps.

I'm certain I didn't hit the rev limiter, I almost never exceed 6000, and the car is chipped so the limiter is raised a little anyway.

I was using ordinary unleaded rather than high octane, because it wasn't available in Corsica - could that be the cause?

The rattle sound when turning the key to II is a very strong sign that the LH could be about to fail, but it's not done anything suspicious since then, so I'm still rather puzzled.
