Default Coolant hose sucked flat?!?! pics

Hi all, what's up with this?

Engine warm, idling. It goes away when I switch it off. I have never experienced any overheating or other cooling issues.

Is this normal? What exactly does this piece of hose do?

Nope not normal. That's the vaccum hose for the aux air valve. The valve is only open (operating) during engine warm up.
Your hose has collasped and needs to be replaced. Don't think that hose is available anymore so just remove it and match it up at the local auto store.

It appears that a straight hose was bent around to make a connection between the AAV and intake. Since the AAV is closed, the engine vacuum is further collapsing the hose. Harm? Not if the hose opens up when the engine is cold. If too restricted, it can lower the cold idle. I would visit the local auto parts store and look for a shaped hose that has the same diameter and makes a 180 degree turn to replace this section.

And check the condition of the other heat-soaked hoses in the engine bay.
The coolant hoses do not last very very long.
And if you don't know the condition of the fuel lines, replacement will probably be in order. Engine heat cooks the fuel line and make them prone to crack and leak.

That is NOT the proper hose. I think someone installed a flimsy water hose in place of the form fitted vac hose. They ARE still available as I bought one last winter to replace mine. This should be a thicker, more rigid hose.
