Why don't people like the 928?

Jim,
I LOVE those quotes! I think there are a few from the guy that does the PBS (and used to be on speed TV too) Motorweek show (he loves the 928), as well as a few from Jeremy Clarkson too. We need to compile a few of these quotes from the masters of the motoring press...

Tony Lapine said it best: “Give us credit that we learned a bit during the 20 or so years that we built the rear engine sports car and we had a few ideas how to improve on it. That's why 911 drivers don't like the 928, it doesn't feel like it’s handling properly because the onset of all the bad habits of the 911 are pushed much higher up the overall performance curve. It is very hard to make it do the bad things a 911 chassis will do and so it’s perceived to be sluggish or heavy. In fact if you look at the speedometer or tachometer you are actually eating up the terrain at a much higher level with more confidence. That was our goal.
"Cynics and died-in-the-wool 911 and 356 fanatics tend to write the 928 off as a cross between a 924 and a Corvette. They're wrong. If you approach this car with an open mind, open the door, sit down, fire it up and drive it away, it will quite simply blow your mind. To get out of whatever you were driving and take the 928 for a spin is as liberating as your first ride on a motorcycle, your first kiss from a girl who knew how. You may frighten yourself, in a burst of unbridled enthusiasm, but the 928 won't. It's a rolling womb of whispering, humming, tactile assurances that everything on this particular road on this particular day is going to be all right. Dreamlike, you fly down the road like a bat out of hell with nothing more than the blurring of the trees and the moan of the engine to call your attention to the speedometer. This is grand touring, folks, and whatever it costs, it's worth It." - David E. Davis, Jr. April 1978

That was great stuff.
My favorite Jeremy Clarkson quote was about the Ford GT.
"A pantwetting combination of style and aggression..." I thought that was hysterical and true.

This is what John Davis said about the 928 during their 25th Anniversary special in 2006.
“From the very beginning of Motorweek we had a saying, that the cars are the stars. But when you test 150 cars a year it’s hard to have a favorite, but I do have one; the Porsche 928.
Now the last one we tested was a ’93 928 GTS. It was coming to the end of it’s life and it had not gone over well with Porsche fans because the engine was in the front and it drove the rear wheels, but I loved that car, it’s the quintessential GT. It was fast, it had great handling, it was comfortable, a wonderful sounding V8 and that’s the sports car I always wanted to own.”

The 928 was the right car, at the right time, for the right market BUT for the wrong customers (911 drivers).
Only older guys in Germany know what a 928 actuall is and what it represents. It used to be the FLAGSHIP of the Porsche company for about 18 years of production.
It still looks modern and handles very well. I took a drivers education class a couple of weeks ago and the younger drivers had no idea what MJ my GTS was.
All drivers had to introduce their cars and they couldn't believe that my Porsche is an automatic. BTW Automatic is still not very popular in Germany and made funny comments about the car.
They couldn't believe how fast I took my GTS around the course and how easy it was to drive.
When we were done, the instructor asked us about our experiences and it was my time to make some funny comments
Nothing beats a 928's V-8

I get nothing but love in my 83.
Yesterday I was on my way home from work and a bike cop sped up and was on my driver side rear. I started freaking out since my exhaust is a little loud. He followed me for about a mile. At the light he pulled up to my window and asked if I had any problems with the car. I responded "No, why do you ask?". He then told me in high school this was his dream car. He complemented me on the car and told me to have a great day. I thought that was awesome and was relieved I wasn't getting a ticket.

Today, the company I work for had an employee car show. 40 cars and bikes were entered. There were all kinds of cars and trucks. Families were invited and there was food, games, and carnival rides for the kids large and small.
Thanks to 928 Motorsports I got my RMB before noon just in time to slap it on and get to the show. And yes, it made a big difference! At one point during the show the company owner started up his Rune and revved it to show off the sound. He was almost immediately joined by an old flat head harley hard tail chopper. Then, a new GT40 started up, revving to compete. I couldn't resist, jumped in the GTS with the new RMB and joined in the fun.
It got everyone's attention when the company owner revved up his Rune. They laughed when the open piped Harley met and beat his loudness, then got all quiet when the GT40 joined in. When I reved up the mighty GTS it's roar was meet with cheers and applause from the entire crowd. No one else event bothered to try after hearing the Porsche 928 V8 battle cry, not even the Bucket T Roadster, Corvette, or Cobra Kit.
It surprised me the GTS got every bit as much attention as the GT40. Maybe because it was Iris Blue and the GT40 was gray, but everyone did refer to it as "The Porsche." The kids loved to watch the headlights go up and down. The machinist and engineers thought the tool kit was cool, and yes, I am the only Porsche owner in a company of 500 employees.
Don't know who won any awards yet, it was people's choice and the winners are going to be announced next week at our employee meetings after they have a chance to tally up all the ballots.
All in all, pretty fun for a Friday afternoon at work. Everyone hopes they do it again and want to add a burn out competition.

Yea, those wheels are GREAT! I would trade my 17" Fikse FM10's for a set! FM10's are nice, but I have ALWAYS had a thing for the thin 5 spoke design! I prefer the CIII wheels (isn't that the style prior to these?) to these but understand these are stronger.

Brought my car to a local cruise night of about 500 cars (yeah it was a big crowd last night) and I have to say that every time I came back to my car their were a few people looking at the engine or inside. A few times I saw them dragging someone else back to take a look and they would just stare at the engine bay or interior. I was invited to another show going on today but I had already planned on working on the wheels to get them ready for the upcoming concours.
Seriously, people love these cars and are drawn in by them. Women in particular love them, it always turns their heads when the car goes by.

Hi,
here is a shot of my car from a ferry on river Elbe in Germany.I think "Rauchquarzmetallik"is a classik Porschecolour and a very good looking one.
The look from above on a 928 twentyfive years ago at the same place was like a vision from a car far in the future.
Now i own two 928. :-)

The are the super lightweight Carerra 5 spoke lightweights, the Carerra Classic 5 spokes that were heavier replacements due to the lightweights breaking and bending, and what I have the Carrera III 5 spokes.
The guy that has the GT40 works in maintenance. His hobby is restoring cars. He helped restore a Mustang GT 500. The guy paid him with a GT 500 that needed restoring. After restoring his GT 500 he traded the GT 500 for the GT40. The GT 500 was really really nice. He loves taking people for a ride and scaring the beegeebees out of them with the acceleration.
