Can someone name a _single_ show originated by the BBC that was successful when transmogrified to the US?

The Office.

Probably the exception that proves you're right.

Ok. I figured that there would be one.

I have it on good authority that there was a totally botched version of Coupling a few years ago. I don't have a list of botched BBC->USA transplant operations though.

Btw, PDK is out presently. Watcha gonna to do about your handle?

On topic: Clarkson rocks! Top Gear rocks!

Off topic: I liked Fifth Gear too.

Oh god, Adam Carolla (sp?) is going to host a USA version of Top Gear? That's gonna suck. I can't stand him. Actually, I won't even watch.

I just saw that 101 Cars You Must Drive show, and that Alonzo dude is a loser. WTF is going on with these car shows?

Count me as an Alain DeCadenet (Victory by Design) fan and a Clarkson/Top Gear fan! Both are great shows, and the drive clips from VbD can't be beat!

Here he is.

You must be joking! De Cadenet is the most engaging Auto -Journaliist there is- and he's a walking encyclopedia of Car & driver knowledge. He spits out facts and weaves tales all the while driving on the ragged- edge. The dude is just COOL!

well it wasn't strictly the BBC but there is that little British born #1 talent show 'American Idol'

For the rest - British humour doesn't translate very well (must be this missing u) so its amazing The Office did anything.

Period histories aren't much appreciated & much of the rest seems targetted elsewhere from American mainstream interests... and of course the BBC standards seem to be rather lower than they used to be...

(I'm sure Roger remembers those good old days... of course back then we didn't have much choice either)

I think the worst thing about watching these shows, is we often watch to learn, from people who present themselves as 'authorities' on the subject. Then they come out and say something that is so blatantly wrong, we then know we can't rely on anything they say as fact. Which makes watching the show no more enlightening than watching cartoons.

Speaking for myself I don't watch the show for training. I watch it for shear pleasure. I love it.

LOVE V by D and De Cadnet, as well as Clarkson, Cpt. Slow, and Hamster, as well as 5th Gear... Tiff Needell is a HELL OF A DRIVER and racer! Not sure why that did not make it! Adam Carolla??? REALLY??? Just kill me now! What a freaking A$$HAT that guy! Got through about 5 minutes of 101 cars and nearly set myself on fire it was so bad!

American Top Gear. Going to watch it.
It may stink. It may rock.
It's about cars. That's what counts.

BBC Top Gear is highly scripted.
Adam Carolla likes to ad lib so we'll see how good his comedic instinct is.

Don't watch the show.
The only message that sends is that NBC took a wrong gamble and there is
NO audience interested in automobile shows.
They tried the **** poorly scripted Knight Rider. Turned into a very bad GM commercial.

May NBC Top Gear make it through 1st season. Took BBC Top Gear a little while to get traction as the hosts' interactions gelled.
Heck. They tossed 1 of the first season host before they arrived at the current host mix.
