Not trying to hijack, but while were talking about rear quarters, what would be the recommended fix for the common rusting around the passenger rear quarter window? Is replacing the quarter the only way?

When I say "embarrassing" I mean that it is obvious to the world that I let my car get damaged like this.

Ironically, just before this happened the car was driving better than it has in years after just changing all the fluids!

Your '91 is rusting in that area? Most of the rust is on the surface. I speculate that what happened is the steel was galvanized and then stamped into shape which would cause breaks in the protective layer around the window. With that said, it should also have rust issues inside, but they seldom do. To repair, remove the window and either grind or sand blast the rust out. Apply a metal treatment/rust converter to help prevent new rust from developing and then start the painting painting process.

Actually I'll probably have to have a whack at this too while I'm at it.

Based on everything that's been said here (thanks all, lots of good info!), I'm going to try and mold it out myself, just so it's not a glowing beacon of my own stupidity (i.e. leaving it in drive). Down the road, when I have enough money for a professional, then I'll have it redone the right way!

Then it'll be time for a paint job...

So this is a customer's car that was restored / repaired at Roger's 928R US compound ?? Or a goodwill save ( a Bill Ball ) by the DFW owners group ? What was it that the dealer refused to do ? use outside sourced parts !
