Default Center Console Electrical Fun

So I found some time to tackle my list of center console projects. I was hoping to:
  • Correct cigarette lighter wiring so it turns on and off with the ignition(courtesy of a PO)
  • Replace the clock
  • Hook up stereo headunit dimmer lead to dash lighting
  • Replace pass side window switch, which was getting stuck in the UP position
Fun project. The first trick was to figure out how the lighter had been rewired and find the original correct power lead. (You were right Alan!) A little multimeter work identified an ignition-switched wire, and pulling the fuse confirmed it was the lighter power. Yay! But the illumination light for the lighter socket didn't fit the only place it could mount. A non-original lighter/ashtray module perhaps? No matter - I left it disconnected because I don't want the glow whenever my radar detector is plugged in.

The new clock went in just fine after I figured out how to remove it. The old one had been connected to a switched power source, so it never showed the right time, but that didn't matter because you couldn't read the cracked display, anyway.

The dimmer lead was easy enough - the hack installers didn't even bother trying to connect it when they put in the headunit. I hooked it up to the dimmer wheel ("upstream" side), which activated the dimmer function for nighttime lighting.

And finally the window switch. Easy enough to replace, but the new one sticks just like the old one. I guess it is getting pinched by the trim or something. Oh well...

I found a couple of oddities under there. Can anyone identify these wires for me?

The first picture shows a hacked-up wiring harness I found on the driver's side. The current headunit is wired into this one. Was this the original radio wiring harness by any chance? What are those other wires that are not being used anymore?

The second one is on the passenger side. Is this the code reader connection?

Lastly - I have all three relays installed there under the headunit (the blue relay and two others behind it). This came up recently in another thread. Does anyone know what they all do? I know one is the door-open-or-lights-on chime.

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the info!

So any idea what the third relay could be?

Are you sure about the connector for the amp? Mine did not come with the "additional" amplifier (i.e., standard radio). Would they have run the wire anyway?

Gaz I would pull the relays check there numbers against the link. You got me on the radio but it does look like the interconnect for Blaupaunkt amp.

That's a pretty smart idea, Shadow. Thanks! Although I don't think I want to go digging around under the console again out of idle curiosity.

Have you looked under the cover by the passenger door? That is where the DIN cable usually goes.

That first picture looks like the remnants of the original radio connector I had on my car. Its likely all cars had that years amp connector regardless how they were actually optioned.

That makes sense, because I know that I do not have the separate amp by the passenger's seat. It makes sense that they'd run the cable at the factory in case an owner wanted to upgrade.

Care to take a stab at the 3-relays question, Alan?

The 928 Specialists site is incorrect on the anti theft relay except for in 1989 - as applies to this car. 90-95 was a new single combined alarm/interior lights/central locking module under the passenger seat (LHD)

The chime relay is correct (the one with the holes on the end) the others may be the seatbelt delay relay (to the dash) and the optional relay for the alarm (light flasher: Fogs/Stop only). There are 2 more primary alarm modules in the console/dash on this model year - but they are bigger. There is also a central locking module - also bigger.

Japanese models also had a speed warning buzzer relay.
