Exclamation 1991 928s4 stereo upgrade suggestions

Hello,

I have a beautiful 91 black 928, low miles, just bought a few months ago that needs a stereo upgrade.

Right now it has the stock CD2 but one of the rear speakers is shot.

What I am looking for are suggestions for a new head unit, amp, sub and speaker replacement (original if possible) that will handle clean sound, satellite radio, CD and not create a huge custom install (sometimes these things can start at one place and get out of control) -

I know this is a question with many potential subjective opinions, but would appreciate to hear from those that have give a small upgrade to the original stereo.

Well here is my 2 cents worth;

1) To make it simple I went with a 5 channel amp. (you are going to need to do away with the factory amp and get some power from some sort of amp arrangement) hooked up as follows;

Ch. 1 & 2 for the front door speakers
Ch 3 & 4 for the rear side speakers at the seats. (didn't use the speaker in the hatch.
Ch 5 Sub.

I mounted the sub in the spare wheel area with an enclosure make of fiberglass. Any good stereo shop could make one for you. Also in the rear area you can build it up a couple of inches and flush mount the amp with only the top surface visiable. (this also gives you a couple more inches of depth for the sub. There are some pic's somewhere on here of that done.

Also I used a 3 way speaker set from "Boston" can't recall the model number but the high and mid speaker fit in the front doors with the orginal grills very easy. and the 6" for the rear.

Many head units to choose from.

Hope this helps.

Are you the guy that was looking at that house on the hill in Napa? I was working at the house across the street and I asked you about your car. If so, this car is one very nice example of a 928. Looks like it just came off the production line.

I took mine to Soundwave in San Carlos. Dave has worked on a few 928s. It's a pretty long drive from Napa but it might be worth the trip as most regular stereo installers cause more problems when upgrading 928 electronics. http://www.soundwaveme.com/

Also, if you join Rennlist, I think only then will you be able to search the archives and there has been a lot of discussion on stereo upgrades.

First, hold on to that CD-2, the car is worth more with that radio than just about anything else you can put into it. Apparently there is no one that can fix a CD-2 anymore, so box it up and keep it for the performance verification stage of the 2027 PCA councours that your car is going to win......

Second, check out the following link to Dave's upgrade page (happily written for a 91GT!), there's a wealth of info on the stock wiring and how to upgrade with minimal disruption:

As to the speakers, FWIW they can be repaired (post #10 for info, below)

or re-foamed DIY:

Thank you all for the great advice - I will research this and try to come up with the best options - and yes that was me looking at the house on the hill - PS. Did not like it at all, so the search continues!

In my 90 GT the previous owner had put a pair of thin Alpine Amps, a 4 channel and a 2 channel on a board the raise the floor of the rear hatch a couple of inches. This was before Satellite Radio and iPod so I went with a Nakamichi in-dash receiver/6 disc changer. The display matched the 928 very nicely. I replaced the door and hatch speakers with Infintiy Kappa components, I replaced the 6 inch side panel speakers with JL Audio 6 inch subs. An install shop built custom 1/2 inch surrounds so the 6 inch subs went in without modifying the car or grills. I also added a Rockford Fosgate Surround sound processor on the amp board to drive 4 channel surround and subs. It sounded absolutely fantastic, and still had a spare tire.
