Default Call Range! ?

In the digital dash display, when you reach a certain level of gas in the tank, you get a message saying "Call Range!"

So, how in the hell did they come up with these words (and the exclamation point)? Was it an awkward translation from German to English? Is it a ROW expression we've never heard of here in the states?

LOL, I was wondering about the same thing.

I remember the first time I saw that come up on my screen I thought "What the hell is call range?!". It took me a while to realize it was related to remaining fuel.

Would be interesting to hear how they came up with this one.

You can cause the digi display to show remaining miles on the tank. Rotate the middle window display to show that and the 'call range!' message will cease until the car sputters to a stop. Makes sense to me to display 'call range!' when it wants you to look at the remaining range in the tank.

But wouldn't "Fuel Range" or "Check Range" have made more sense...? or better still "Low Fuel" or these days.... "Check Wallet"

If 928s were jets, it'd say "Bingo Fuel". So how'd our US Military come up with that one??

Thats been an inside saying I have with our 18 yr old daughter for the past few years. If either of us says Bingo Fuel to the other, we know that they are asking if you want to go to the gas station/mini mart with them. Not sure how we started that exactly, but it's usually asked cause one of us has the munchies!!

Aside from the wording, why the hell is it a RED warning? I can understand the Coolant Level and Toothed Belt ones being red..

" Call range" = go to your how many miles to empty screen.

LOW FUEL may have been a good one or CHECK LEVEL with a gas pump in the middle window.

Its inaccurate anyway. I have had 9 miles left (apparently) and the car sputtered and rolled up to the pump. I try not to test the the computers guess work much

Mine is so accurate - I reset the level - I can drive within a couple of miles of empty and have no problem.
Schocki reset his and it was accurate to the exact mile when he ran out of gas. He had a can of gas with him 8>).
Awesome German technology.

Call = Call up or Select, ie., display in 1980's computer lingo.

My GTS manual describes the "Remaining Distance" display as "Range calculated on the basis of fuel left in tank, present consumption and average consumption" The first line under "Auxiliary functions" of the "On-board computer funcitions" is "Pull the control lever to call up auxiliary functions"
