Call Range! ?

I read the other day in the WSM on how to reset it for calibration. I'll see if I can find it today when I'm back at the shop.

Keith, my old '89 did the same thing but I had a split hose to the in-tank pump. With a good pump I would have made it. I was trying to run the fuel down to change both fuel pumps back at my house.

So the prevailing theory is "Call Range" is a command to toggle over and check Remaining Miles to Empty? Makes sense, except all the other messages are in a passive voice, like "Toothed Belt", so if they were consistent they'd say something like "Low Fuel". Come to think of it, why didn't they just pop up Remaining Miles to Empty when the magic point is reached?

Would love to hear someone from Germany tell us what he German words/translation are.

My '94 is the only one I have tested and it is AMAZINGLY accurate. Got to 1 mile and the thing sputtered as I gave it some gas to pull into a gas station! WOW! Just glad I made it! I don't do that ANY MORE!!

do you have after market tires , different fuel pressure regulator? These use speedometer and injector duty cycle to calculate fuel consumption as well as tank level

I've seen the warning a couple of times in my German 928, but couldn't remember the exact wording, so I looked it up in the 'Betriebsanleitung' (Owner's Manual).

It says "Reichweite abrufen!".

My German is quite limited, but I do believe the "Call range" is a fairly direct translation of the German version.

Now you guys got me to thinking. No, not about how accurate my "range" finder is, but the actual messages themselves.

Any of you computer hacks out there no where these messages are stored and if we can change them???? I would think this is a possibility.

Well they are in the eprom that holds the code - and you may be able to change them - but its likely the start-up has a check-sum and would barf unless you know how to give it the correct check-sum for the changes you've made - so certainly possible but not so easy...

You couldn't make the messages any longer than the current display size - so the option to say "You bonehead you almost ran out of fuel again!" just won't work.

I had a Chevy Blazer that said I had 56 miles to go on a tank... then it died!

Alan- Wouldn't the code in the EPROM basically tell it to display an address that was XXXXXXX-XXXXXX many characters long, including spaces? The trick would be finding where in the code. If so, I would think you could put anything in there to display, such as:

Low Fuel
Get Gas
No Mas Gas
Your Fired
ABORT?


Maybe I'll pull the bin file next time I go into the pod.

The reason it doesn't say "Low Fuel" or "Check Fuel" is because what it is trying to make you change the display to does not show the fuel level, but it shows your effective range. The word "Range" must be there. The word "Call" I suppose could be replaced with "Display" or "Show", but I think that would make it more confusing.

You know, I was thinking about getting my hands on the code of the digital dash so I could modify it and add a boost gauge display, Something like a set of horizontal bars/lines that go up; 1 psi per bar. Or maybe just a psi number display. Anyone extracted the code?

Just connect your boost signal into the outside temperature input. You could display your boost in both Fahrenheit and Celsius!

Where is that sensor anyway, mine was reading 107°F today and it is only 95°F.

In the alternator cooling duct.
