Cross country - should I?
Well, making a big move west in a month. The question is, do I drive the 928 or ship it?
It's been running strong (fingers crossed/toes crossed crossed), and this past winter I did alot - whole intake R&R, new injectors, tb/wp/thermostat, fluid flush, new oil/filter, new shocks/springs/tires, new fuel lines, new starter, and various other things. I'm moving from Pittsburgh to Bozeman, Montana. It's about 1800 miles.
I drove to SITM and back without incident, except for what seemed like tremendous heat build up under the rear and in and around the battery box. That heat did not affect performance as far as I could tell.
The car is an 86.5, with 95K on the clock when the odo gear went south a month ago (add another 1K).
Shipping in a closed transport per my quote is about $2300 (seems very steep, but gas prices are high too).
So - what to do?

I drove mine from Minnesota to Oregon when I purchased it and it was a priceless experience.
Driving in Montana is great. Truckers told me they drive 90 = 75 mph + 15 over and don't get bothered; however, that may have changed in 3 years.
Drive it, the experience will be priceless

Get AAA long distance towing 200 miles !! or at least the 100 mile option. And I can have most parts most places the next morning. Plan on driving during the week when shops and shippers are open and you should be fine. It is like driving 18 different one hundred mile trips. Figure 22 hours of drive time . That is two days of driving ! I did 1,100 plus from Texas last time in ONE DAY ! in an 86 model 944. Go for it

wow - 10 zip in favor of driving thus far! If I do drive, I'll need to chart out all of the Rennlisters and 928 OC folks along the way, just in case. I think Andrew and his merry band are directly in the path. Who else is along the I-90 corrider?

Mapquest your route....plan your stops ,get on this forum and you probably can meet several 928 owners along the way....but it will slow down the MPH average

DRIVE IT!!! Drive it like you stole it!!! I agree with the other poster...You'll have a great story either way!! And on those long Montana roads...BOOT IT! Clean out the cobwebs!!! Yes in the end you and your 928 will be SO HAPPY you did it! Just my 2 cents worth! Lets us know if you drive...after the drive let us know how it went! Inquiring minds need to know!!
