Default Torque tube measurements

I am getting ready to rebuild my '78 5sp torque tube. I think my carriers have moved, but the bearings seem to be ok (still going to replace them). I've read several great threads on how people rebuilt theirs, but I have not found the measurements where to locate the bearing cariers. Does anybody know how far they should be from the ends of the tube & how critical is this distance, please?
Thank you.

There will be fairly visible signs on center shaft where bearings have been most of their life. Use those to position them again. Depending on which version of the tube you have (early '78 or later '78 to early '80 MY) correct positions are possibly different. There should be some measurements in this thread:

Thanks for the link. I'v seen that one & it is a big help. However, I don't see any placement info for the carriers. I believe my bearings are ok - no noise, however the clutch is what failed. The pilot bearing is toast & the pivot ball for the throw out arm broke (small style). I'fe rebuilt the clutch & upgraded to the larger pivot ball. I was told that the most likely cause of this damage is that the drive shaft bearings moved. I can't see that they have indeed moved or not. About how far should they be from the ends? 3", 9" or what? THe photo on that link shows his to ba about where mine are, but is that the right or wrong location? I'm also interested in the heavy duty upgrade bearings, which may make this moot. I figure this placement is critical with the possibilities of harmonics in the driveshaft - but I don't know I'm being **** or not. Any help on how to figure if my bearings are in the right place with a ruler is appreciated. I wm going to change the bearings one way or the other & want to make sure I don't mess this up. I also plan to put some sort of stop in there to prevent them from moving in the future. My 78 has the later length drive shaft. I bought a new clutch shaft & mine is the newer one.

Thank you for your help.

Check message #44 in that thread. Bearings on all six shafts I have seen have been in their correct positions based on markings they have left to centershaft. Just take the tube apart and use them as quide where bearings need to be.
