Default Heavy duty torque tube bearings, Gretch needs advice.

OK, I searched on this subject and got a whole page of threads...... I read a reference a little while back about a Renny who developed a set of heavy duty torque tube bearings....

I am getting a grumble out of Gretch at idle, that sounds like it might be the torque tube bearings, so I want to find out who has this product, if it is still available and what the feedback is on it.

Looks like I may be doing the job this winter.......

I had her out on the interstate this weekend....... DAMN that car injects a LOT of adrenelin into the blood stream!!!!!!! Still smooooooooooooooth as can be all the way up to "oh shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit, I better back off before I get bagged for flying!"

Thanks Fabio. Any idea who has installed them? any testamonials? does he have a web site or do I just email him???

Dean, anything in particular?????????? I have posted lots of pictures over the years here. What specifically do you wan to see??? engin bay? interior, wheels? I mean, it looks like a well kept 89 GT from pretty much all angles, until a knowledgable person get's up close. Then the updates, (wheels, mirrors, steering wheel, center console, Supercharger install) make it a somewhat special car. Damn! a golden opportunity to be an attention *****........ ****!!!!!!!! I can't resist!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You may be able to get some more time if you wanted to drill some holes in the tube and jet in some medium oil in there.

I am all ears............ Is this a recommended approach, by others? I don't want to do any damage that I cannot repair. What is the procedure? is there a write up anywhere? How are these bearings lubed in the first place?

Just replacing them with good normal sized ones will do you just fine Gretch. I mean, unless you are visiting the drag strip weekly.

They are steel cage bearings, and what I did was drill a few holes where I knew the bearings were, and sprayed in some lube that I knew would go in. It made the noise go away for 5000 miles until I took it apart fully. Originally they are packed with grease, but because of the heat in the tube, the grease runs out and cakes, and you end up with dry bearings.

Is it recomended? Hell no. Nothing I do here is "recomended"

The only "damage" are the 1/16 holes drilled in at an angle so you can spray the bearings.

I just thought of something though. Drilling holes in a TT might void your cash back core money if you were planning on turning in the TT to get a rebuilt one from 928intl.

Beautiful car Gretch...Do you have A/C? I don't see the condenser up front. Is that a stock radiator? Where does your temp run with your set-up?

I just couldn't place your car and wanted to see more. Obviously a lot of work...looks like it returns multiples of fun. Thanks!

Dean, For now I have the condenser out, so no AC. The car is a weekender / garage queen...... I retired her at 100,000 miles and just play with her now. I have to do the R12 to R134 conversion and have not quite gotten around to it yet. Yes the radiator is the original one that came with the car.

In all but agressive mountain climbing the temp stays pretty much just a hair below the second white line. That includes the occasional 120 mph blasts down the coughtrackcough.......

Brendan, So maybe the best bet is to just get a rebuilt TT from Jim........ I guess I need to look into that approach.......... I have had a brand new clutch sitting on the bench for several years now, this will give me a good reason to put that puppy in.........

Well, if you have a clutch and need a TT, just take it out and send it in. I have done three TTs, and I have it down pretty well, but if I just wanted stock for stock I would send it to LA.

Of course, shipping on that will run a bit more than thier 495 price. I forget you can't just drive over and pick it up. You are ALL THE WAY OVER there.

Its a process of alot of haranging with some threaded bar and angle iron stock.

Gretch,

Constantine is selling the 'final solution' to TT bearing problems. I think he just sent you a PM, but here is a picture of the TT bearings and shaft he has developed (my hand is on the complete shaft with bearings and there is a single bearing on the table in the foreground) . They are easily 4 times larger than the stock ones and made 100 times stronger with better materials. Put these in and your TT will never again be an issue and you can eliminate the stock TT vibration dampener as well. I think you can order them through 928 Specialists by now.

The shaft is still the same size. Does it spring or is it more solid? The flex and breakage of the shaft happens at the front usually.

Hey Constantine :

They Look great !
Could you give us a tour on what you've developed. Are there any rebuilding instructions for your type of bearings?

The TT is my project this winter.
