Question Mystery Part

Regarding 87S4 auto US model. In completing the coolant expansion tank RR, I had to remove the airbox. In refitting parts that were fastened to the airbox, this part just broke away in my hands with little force. It formerly attached to the passenger (right US) corner of the airbox and has a rubber cap pinch bolted to the end. The end of the hollow aluminum tube is now dangling. Please advise and have a great 928 weekend.

Looks like the CO sampling tube to me.

I'm guessing that you'll want to crimp closed the other end of the tube.

Mines gone too. Like the above said, crimp the tube from the exhaust closed so there isn't any ehaust leakage.

Okay, thanks very much. I'm thinking I'll either crimp it or use the cap on the end of this one and peench it off. Many thanks again.

Uh, there's a problem. I can't find the other end now. Do you know where it comes out? Does anyone have a photograph? This is really starting to bug me that I can't find it. I specifically recall it dangling, or at least I thought I did, and now I can't find it either from topside or underneath with the car up on stands. Any guesses as to where this thing comes out?

David, the other ends of those tubes attach to the exhaust manifolds just an inch up from the flanges that connect the pipes from the cats etc. You need to get to them from under the car. The right (pass) side is on the side of the exhaust pipe and easy to get to, the left side is on top of the pipe as I recall. Rumor is that a suitably-sized bearing-ball makes a perfect plug- remove tubing-nut, remove tubing, insert ball, replace nut and tighten.

Cheers, Jim

Thanks for posting this. Very interesting a lug nut will fit there. I'm partial to the ball bearing solution and have used it on the passenger side. Found that the driver side is punctured and have removed it. The hardware store closed before I could go back and get another ball bearing. Will be back in tomorrow morning. Thanks again. You know, if not for this forum and you guys, I would have been breathing more CO and I did get a serious head ache on a short trip a couple months ago. Thanks a bunch to you guys for pointing this out. FWIW, I did search the archives for "CO sample tube" but, of course, that was to precise and needed to be broadened a bit. Again, thanks.

So David, what size ball bearing? I'm trying to plan ahead here...

Thanks, Jim

You can also use a $2 NPT cap nut, available at your local hardware store, to cap the bungs in the manifolds. This is what Porsche did starting in mid-89 except that the Official Porsche cap nuts cost $36 each.

Also, you'll need to plug the holes in the airbox.

I went to Ace Hardware. The ball bearing size that fits is 716BB. The 38BB is too small and cannot be tightened sufficiently.
