Problem solved; thanks everyone for contributing. I know this is an old thread but I finally got around to tackling this after going after a list of other problems first. Turns out the problem was a soldered connection under the passenger's seat--here's a picture (hopefully this can help someone else with a similar problem). The connection sits just in front of the carpet from the rear passenger foot well area and as such seems like it might be prone to getting damaged.
