Default Shock absorbers died during TB job

One more collateral damage due to a long TB job.

I spend 2 months working on the engine to replace the timing belt (about 6 full working days). During this period the car was lifted since I left the alternator on a small bench that made it impossible to lower the car to the ground.

The result was that the shock absorbers are done. The car is now almost impossible to drive. They were not in a pristine condition before the job. But now they are completely gone.

Any idea of what to buy. If possible some European brand since it always take ages to get something from the USA. They get stuck in the Portuguese customs. I think they are overloaded with work. Everyone is buying in the USA because of the weak dollar.

Hi Miguel:

Remind us of the type and year of 928 you own.

Thanks!

I have a set of brand new Bilstein shocks for your 928's year of manufacture is compatible. They are new in the box and will sell them at below typical cost.

You can call or email me for details.

Will the car being lifted kill the shocks? Man, I thought this was an acceptable way to store the car. I may have to rethink some of my long term projects. When I do a project it usually takes me a lot longer than the average person. So, if I plan on doing the MM and oil pan gasket the car will probably be up for a while.

Is there anything you can do to Protect the shocks if you know it will be lifted for a while.

lifting the car should not affect the shocks at all. unless the shocks are bottomed out (suspension being removed) they just sit at that particular point.

I think the Bilstein option is good - stock on GTS in USA was Boges - both are European brands so should be available locally.

"Will the car being lifted kill the shocks?"

I never thought about that as well. Maybe this ones are old. So during this period they just got worst. The strange thing is that they became so bad.

sounds really odd

I dont think ive EVER heard a similiar thing happening.

I know old timers when they have cars sittiing they put them on blocks so as not to kill the tires, but ive never heard of shocks going because a car was lifted. Maybe its just a coincidence?

Maybe the front end didn't settle and it just feels funny. You need from 20 to 50+ miles to settle the front suspension.

I wouldn't think the shocks are bad unless the car is bouncing uncontrolablely.

I would think it is more like the old bushings got deformed and now causing a serious misalignment.

In any case, if I were to change the shocks now I would definitely change the bushings at the same time.

The car is bouncing. We can fell it just by pressing the fenders. Driving it is not easy to control. Actually it is dangerous. But I also believe that they just died because it was time to. And this 2 months at rest just gave a little help. Maybe if it was on the ground it would be the same.

What are the Bushings?
