Default BMW 335 not that much faster than my baby.

Went out for a drive this weekend and on my way home had a white BMW 335 pull up next to me at a stoplight. I was looking over at the car checking it out. I couldn't see the driver due to the level of tinting on the glass. I am not sure if he thought my looking over at his car was a challenge or what, but when the light went green he took off. Now, I was not looking to race him, but I was curious if my 928 could keep up so I put the pedal down to the floor. First gear was all 335. He pulled on me pretty easily until his rear wheel was at my bumper, then I started to gain some back almost* pulling even at the top of second gear.
*(almost being optimistic, with my front wheel up to his front door)

I am pretty chicken so this is where it ended. I was getting pretty close to the speed limit (give or take 30mph), and I did not want to push my luck with a ticket.

I can"t help but think that if this where on a closed course and I could have stayed on it I may have actually gotten the upper hand (maybe). But, I was pretty impressed that I was able to hang in there with a very nice modern Beemer. Tests of this car have shown the twin turbo inline 6 was under rated in terms of power by the factory and typically is putting down near 300 RWHP when dyno'd. The car also weighs pretty much the same as a 928 at just under 3600 lbs. Car magazine testing has shown it to run to 60 mph in 5 sec and run a 1/4 mile in 13.7 at 104 mph.

This has me itching to finish getting my car fully back to everything working like it did when it left the factory, so I can then proceed to make it better than original with some forced air.

I know this is pretty tame compared to some of the stories I have seen here, but I thought I would share anyway.

I am a huge fan of the 928 and have a pretty quick one. I also have a 335xi. The rated hp output of that motor is 300hp, the word is it is closer to 340hp. I can tell you it does feel stronger then 300hp. I am gonna bet your 87 would not keep up with a 335ix unless the other driver "didn't know he was racing"...........

No stock shark of that vintage came within a half a second to a 5 second 0 to 60.

The 335 beat you with it's 300lb.ft of torque off first gear coming in at 1,400RPM. It's also a 6-speed, so it has shorter gearing than you.

It's fun to mess with those cars in my S/C'ed GT. They think they are so fast in their new ride

LOL^
I had considered the possibility that he "didn't know he was racing". Regardless, he moved out from the light pretty damn quick, and I did my damndest to keep up. He may have been playing with me, but I still had fun.

I drove my friend's 08 335i, with the 6 speed automatic and paddles. He hooked something up to it to allow the boost to stay on just a little longer, to bump the output to ~350 HP.

While driving it I said out loud think that I'd never stay with that car in my 91GT, especially not if I had to shift gears, as that autmatic shifted lightning quick.

You did well to stay with that 335i. You guys weren't racing, just accelerating quickly :-)

Well of course, I would never race. That is illegal.

I think right now that 500RWHP would be too much power for me.

Once I get my car up to snuff with everything sorted, I hope to do a few DE events to better aquiant myself with my cars limits. As it stands right now, I don't think I have gotten anywhere near them.

But, eventually I aspire to have a car like the Gretch Supershark above.

I had a GIANT Diesel truck race me today... What the hell is that about?! He was right behind me at a stop light and it turned green and I took off from the light but not full speed. I didn't even engage first gear, just a regular second gear start at nearly full throttle. Then I checked six and this dude had a HUGE BLACK CLOUD behind him and was coming hard so I went to the floor, got back into 2nd and started to pull away from him thinking, what is this idiot doing?! Then he pulls up next to me as I slow down (hell, I was just trying to get out of his way) and he slows up and then LAYS on it again...this time I just shook my head and let the punk go. Thankfully the a/c was on recirc so I didn't have to inhale the cloud he left behind that I was driving through.

Craziest thing I ever saw. It was a REALLY fast truck, but come on...he probably thought the S4 was a 944 or something... FOOL!

My suspicions about the 928´s lack of willingness when accelerating is due to that lame, 200 mph gear ratio. Isn´t that right?

When comparing to my previous car, a Pontiac Trans AM GTA -88 with a slitghtly modded 350TPI and 4 speed auto I feel that it´s just ability to sprint from standing still the 928´s biggest problem. The T/A had 3,27 gears and I think my -86 32v 928 got the 2,54 gears. The weight is about the same and also the wheelsize.

Is it possible to get final gearing above 3,00 for a 928 or atleast something close to that I´d think it would do hell of a difference?

Way back in a time before my first 928 I drove from OKC to Kansas City to look at a red 928. Not sure of the year model, but the seller was a car lot. I went for a test drive and the car accelerated like nothing I had driven. The salesman talked about being into drag racing 928s and how this car had a really low final ratio. The 5 speed car would NOT go over 110 mph but it got to it very quickly. That was not the kind of 928 I was looking for so I continued my search.

I don't think I would want a car with a higher ratio. The 2.2 is fine with me. I am not going to be using the car to drag race most of the time and like that I can get to highway speeds without having the engine turning high RPMs.

As is, if you get into the sweet spot or the rev range and I don't think it has a "lack of willingness to accelerate"
