Good Luck & Be Safe!!
We all wish we could be there rooting you on in person! Wouldn't that be a blast, to have a large contingent of 928ers with their cars at the event to support Carl! I'm thinkin you 928ers out that way need to coordinate a shark gathering around this event, eh?? That'd make even more of an impression for those paying attention to the 928s

Yes of course, I expect the AWD guys to have an advantage over me in the gravel with their narrow tires and AWD. And in the same breath, I expect to have an advanatge over them on the tarmac with my higher available torque at the bottom end and wide tires to get the power down. Its a trade-off. They are very fast if driven well.
Tech inspection went very smoothly - the picture below shows a young official even checking the dates and SFI numbers on the underwear I will be racing. I'm not kidding. Other pictures below are our car on the scales at scruteneering.
Went back up the hill today and they have graded it and smoothed it quite a bit - it is much improved since yesterday.
We will be in the truck at 3 AM tomorrow, and passing through the Pikes Peak gates at 3:30. We will be on our station at 5:00 AM, the driver's meeting is 5:15 and the first car is let out at 5:30. We practice until 8:30 when the tourists are let onto the road and we gotta leave. All runs are timed by transponder, our best run is our qualifying time. This is the schedule each day for the next 3 days.
Tomorrows section for the Open Division is the W's, the steepest section in the middle of the course that boot-laces itself up the side of the mountain. On Thursday we practice the top of the mountain, and on Friday we practice the bottom-most 4 miles.
Thank you for your good wishes and comments. I'm off to bed.

Carl,
Best wishes up there! Be safe and hope everything goes well. Seems from your schedule you will be driving a bit sleep deprived!
Car looks really well thought out and I really like the vortex generators you have on the leading edge of the hatch. I always thought that would help get the air onto the rear wing better without having to raise the wing into the air creating more drag. Thought this same treatment under the chin to smooth airflow under a fully belly panned 928 ending with some rear strakes that so many sports cars now seem to have would also be helpful without adding too much drag.
Good luck,
Constantine

Good luck Carl and have fun! ![thumbup](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/thumbup.gif)
Mel, those are not the Carrera III's. I believe they are called Carrera 5-spokes. The dead giveaway is the pointedness of the spoke. The C III's are a bit wider and not pointy.

It's great to see you doing this again this year!! It will be interesting to see what last years run did to help W/ this years run. The car looks great W/ those wheels. And as always keep the shiny side up.

After a quick spark plug change to correct some fouling this morning, I was able to lay some times down one ontop another in the W's. I had 3 runs that were within a tenth of each other.
I'm told I settled into 8th place in my division. That's fine. Todays times dont count for anything but practice - the fact that my times are consistent is the most important thing to us.
Tomorrow is going to be a mess. We are doing the top 4 miles of Pikes Peak, and the highway crews have been trenching in new culverts and doing roadwork all week. The road is all ripped up and the fill is soft and not packed down. I feel like the guy who brings a knife to a gunfight. I've got the wrong tools for this section.
But, I come from the "run what you brung" school of racing, so we'll do what we can and make sure we survive the section to do the bottom section (twisty asphalt) on Friday.
Again this year the intercom is not working right and I cannot here Guido. And this is a new intercom purchased only a month or so ago. I have a new driver/navigator intercom coming in from Pennsylvania that will be here tomorrow. We'll install it tommorow afternoon and I hope to be able to hear my co-driver by Fridays qualifying run.

Today was qualifying and practice at the top of the mountain. The tires performed better than we thought they would, and that was a pleasant surprise. It rained, and we had a mix of hard-pack, loose dirt, and mud in sections. Here are a few pictures:
