PCA is what you make of it
Man I am so thankful for our local PCA group. We have EVERYTHING and most all the ranking leaders have owned or DO own something other than 911's! I was pres/VP for a combined 5 years! Fun times! Concours chair for 7 or 8 years... Needless to say I drug a lot of 928 guys along w/ me so we were VERY WELL represented at events, sometimes the front engine cars out numbered the rears even!
GREAT folks in our group too!
Oh, at Parade the PCA Family of the Year was an older retired couple from our club and our club got first place for our website for clubs of our size! How about that?! When I was Pres we won the membership trophy!

I used to belong to PCA but it seemed that 928s were treated like they were from the "wrong side of the tracks". My 968 got more attention for some unknown reason. For me, I didn't perceive much value in membership so I dropped it. Maybe I just happened to hit the wrong events at the wrong time? I know there are fine people in PCA but I'm more comfortable in the 928 neighborhood.

I'm getting toward a point where I'm going to hand it over to someone else. But I think it is what you make it. If you go in with a chip on your shoulder like everyone is against you, you leave thinking that's true. If you go in thinking you're going to make friends, you do that, instead.

I agree to an extent. There are some smaller regions where there are few H2O cooled or more importantly front engine cars and the regular members are older and have chips on THEIR shoulders making it difficult if not impossible for others to get into the group and have any fun. You don't see that with the bigger regions because so many people are there with ALL types of P-cars!
For some reason here in Austin we are lucky. We don't have a HUGE membership, but we cover all the bases and all the owners seem to really get along well regardless of what they drive. Of course I am an eternal optimist and very difficult to get to know (NOT!!) so it is pretty easy for me to make friends...
PCA is a great organization though and we as 928 owners should jump in and get involved and run the show whenever we can to keep the 928 light burning brightly! Keep the faith brothers and sisters!

Jerry, thanks for the kind words. I, along with other folks with cars like Kermit would appreciate anything you can do to assist in getting national to consider a modification to the Preservation Group rules. Bigger than this particular situation is what my happen to PCA Parade Concours d'Elegance if cars like Kermit stop showing up. Bob didn't have many there this year and I suspect b/c there is no Group for them he just didn't bother.
Harv, you are the MAN! From what I saw of your event it was a tremendous hit! I'm sorry I missed your Victory Banquet speech. I know this was a huge undertaking for you and your group of volunteers. Very nice job! You could have put the 911s on the deserted street where we were parked.....

As for the acceptance by PCA'ers of 928s and their owners at events.... I've always said that it is all what each individual makes it. It has a lot to do with attitude of the participant as to how they percieve their accpetance or not. If anyone (whether they own a 928 or a 997 turbo) goes to an event with a negative attitude about the group they are going to get the same. I have been going to PCA events for a LONG time with my 928s and have had a great time! I have met some of my best friends in this world through PCA (Harvey included). I don't go to events thinking I'm not going to be accepted, I go thinking I'm going to have a good time and meet some interesting people and I ususally do....

I've heard back from Mke Lommatzch regarding my initial inquiry.
He states that the PCR Committee will be looking at trying to find a place for low mileage unrestored vehicles like Kermit. He acknowledges the void in classing for this kind of car under the current rules. Mike did mention the possibility of another class amongst the Perservation automobiles, but also re-iterated that adding additional classes is not something the Committee does very lightly or quickly,.
He states that the Committee will meet in September to discuss possible rule changes for 2009, and the new proposals will be on the PCA website for membership comment by October 15th.
If you want your voice heard, I would keep on eye an the PCA website for the new proposals and give your comments.

Im going to bump this one to the top and update this for 2014.
Parade just completed in Monterey a week ago, and I entered my 928 in the concours ( first time).
928s have been lumped together with other early watercooled- 924/944/968 cars.

I entered in preparation- my car is not restored, and not preserved (I have done some restoration), and not all original (PO added spoilers, wheels, redone dash in leather, etc) so Preparation was the only option. Performance category for race cars was dropped.
In preparation there are now 3 levels- Full, Touring and Street. Full is the whole car including underneath, the chassis, suspension, etc. Touring drops that but includes the engine bay. Street is interior and exterior.
Its all about preparation- or better worded as PRESENTATION in this class, originality counts for nothing. For instance I have the Unleaded Fuel Only sticker on the back window that is old brown and cracking- I lost a tenth of a point because of that. In preservation, it would be fine as is. Not only must the car be clean, but it must show well. I have done some replating of the engine parts, but I have not yet done the hood hinges, which now show a difference and thus would be a deduction.
I entered preparation street and was deducted .9 of a point and took 1st in class.
Not many 928s in these events- even at Parade. I think of the 2500-3000 cars that came, maybe under 10 were 928s (judging by the parking lot) I was one of two on the concours field- the other was in touring but didnt place. On the final day the did the "parade", which is usually an escorted tour through town, but in this case it was a gathering and laps of laguna seca. over 500 cars came- I was the only 928.
We need more cars and owners to show up!
Even in Panorama and excellence they are asking ( and looking) for more of these cars to be featured. Now is our time to show and be seen!
While at the concours I got MANY complements on the car and also comments regarding 928s not being seen much any more and how happy they were to see one out and participating.

Congratulations on your win and thank you for representing us at the Porsche Parade! You must have had a blast and good to hear others also enjoyed your 928.
The 928 seems to be coming back in popularity amongst the Porsche circles as fewer of them are being seen.
More 928 owners should join PCA and start representing us at these types of events like you are doing.

We also took the initiative here in DFW with a lot of help from Andy Kay and started to attend local PCA events. WE were very well received and the 928's drew a lot of compliments. They even featured the 928 group on the front cover of the local "Slipstream" magazine.

Congrats & way to represent!!
I agree that all 928 owners should be active in PCA. We have been so for 17 yrs & the local PCA members know my wife & I as the 928ers(and 968ers). I'd say 95% well received & its been yrs since any possible negative comments, etc regarding a 928. In fact, we have been sought out on regular occasion because they know that we love & know the 928. Its why for 5+ yrs we did our two annual 928 gatherings here in Fla at the two PCA races each year. And we became known, recognized, and appreciated for our dedication to the 928. Even mentioned twice in Panorama.

Burning Brakes
Congrats! I've been relatively active in PCA given my odd location between two regions and my schedule. I recently was at a PCA show at the Pinehurst Concours, and that was a lot of fun... my 928 got a lot of attention, and even caught Magnus Walker's eye.
