Default 928 tire jacks suck

tonight I had to change a tire... I thought it should not be a problem as I got the jack about have way up it slipped forward and scratched the paint on the bottom rocker panel, im glad I did not have the tire off yet or it really would have been a problem. Yes the car was in park, the emergency break was on and it was on level pavement. Anyone else had this problem.

I've had that happen too. The jack is an untrustworthy piece of ****.

Were you changing a rear tire?

It is an emergency jack and only should be used as a last resort. AAA membership is well worth the money especially the 100 mile tow....I like that except when I am 120 miles from 928 International with a blown timing belt , $7 for EACH EXTRA MILE

Jim,

ya coulda had them drop it here, then have your friends fix it or use their AAA to have it towed the rest of the way home. Rob in Lancaster/Palmdale has a trailer to shuttle his car around on too.

Even top-notch race car pilots should carry the road help list. Might not save you from the push off the track, but could save you some costs and aggravation once you get to the parking lot.

The 'good news' part of this is that 928 Int'l was likely only 20-30 miles past the 100 mile prpaid distance. Should you buy a second membership for the rest of the ride home? Wonder if that would work...

Bob the logistics of getting a ride home etc. made it easier to just pay the $140 (cash) and have the car here at 928 . The lift ,the air tools, the parts .... but thank you for the thought . I might need to do that in the future.

So has anyone found an acceptable replacement to the factory jack (like a scissor jack) that can be carried in the 928?

I think I will just pick up a spare 944 scissor jack, it's a bit safer than the above mentioned, and sure beats lugging a hydralic floor jack around. Anyone have one they would like to get rid of?

In other words, don't use the jack. It sucks.

Made sure you chock the tires with something, anything before you use it.

I've rolled an Audi (uses the same basic jack design) off the emergency jack ONCE.
I grabbed the fender and couldn't keep the 2800 lbs sedan up in the air as the jack twisted.

I used to carry a cheap small hydraulic jack in the back.
It fits right behind the rear passenger seatback and gets a couple loops of bungee cords to the hatch tie-down points.

Time to find me some of those plastic wedges to chock the wheels.
