Default Things that don't work

We've got lots of threads about 'How-to' do this and how to do that. What I thought I'd post was a couple of things I recently tried that didn't work so well, so no one else tries them exactly this way.

If anyone else has tried new and different techniques only to find they didn't work out so well, feel free to post.

About a week ago I started my long awaited intake refresh. I've been painting the parts as I get them cleaned up and stripped.

I was trying to figure out how to paint the orange 'PORSCHE' logo on the intake sideboxes neatly. Freehand wasn't working so I came up with an elaborate plan:

I would put a piece of 8 1/2 x 11 on one of the boxes, scratch a pencil across it to get the imprint of the letters, then I'd scan it, print a copy, then lay it across a piece of masking tape stuck to wax paper, and cut out the letters with a razor knife. Then I would take the masking tape, lay it across the intake and have a perfect stencil to paint the letters.

THIS DIDN'T WORK. My theory is that a person who can't hold a paint brush steady enough to paint those letters, can't hold a razor knife steady enough to cut out a stencil either.

I'm thinking I'll try the paint pen that I've heard others have used. Boring, but I'm sure it will be effective.

Anyone else?

Is the logo raised lettering?
Use roller?

How about trying to tighten the Timing Belt Tensioner with all of the accessory belts in place. It's easier to cut the Air pump belt off and use a stubby wrench since most of the time the way of loosening the airpump to get the belt of is frustrating enough.

Timing belt 107: Don't set the cams to TDC when the vibration damper is on backwards. It won't start.

Paragraph 107a: Don't assume that the PO put the car back together correctly last time.

The PORSCHE is inset, the other lettering 32v... is raised, but was originally painted the same color (I may do those in black, just for effect, but that's not the problem I was having).

Here's another one: In many cars I've worked on you can 'partially drain' the coolant to do work on the top end without having to drain the whole thing. Because of the way the radiator hoses are in the 928, none of the coolant will drain from the block unless you open the block plugs... and the top end holds a LOT of coolant. BTDT, got the wet shoes to prove it.

If you even THINK you're going to be working on the coolant lines, drain the block and the radiator.

Ha ha ha, Mike coolant always gets everywhere no matter the size of your pan. Get a few bags of kitty litter and spread it around your standard pan when draining coolant. I usually get half of my coolant to drain in the actual pan.

Everytime I do it i think, "This'll be the time I don't have it splash all over the place."
