I have an '82 928 and I just had the alternator replaced. A couple weeks later, the battery died at a parking lot and after jump starting it, the engine would not turn off..even after I take out the key. I eventually got it to turn off by removing the fuel pump fuse. I can't really drive the car anymore because of this problem. Anyone heard about this problem and how it was resolved?
Thanks,
Arnold

You have a short between your ignition controlled circuits and your always on circuits. It can happen anywhere but most likely behind your fuse panel area. Ignition switch is also a possibility
You can inspect the back of the fuse panel and look for blackened, cooked wires.
Good luck

Once i removed the fuse for the fuel pump, i can put it right back without the engine restarting. Thank God! Believe it or not, when it first happened i even disconnected the battery and the engine was still running! Good thing i was able to find out about the fuel pump fuse or i would have started pulling out all the fuses. Havent inspected the back of the fuse panel yet. hopefully it's just the ingnition switch which is not expensvie. it's just the labor that burns the wallet. i've had this car since '91 and rarely driven it since i lived in the city for 13 yrs. and even still, almost every year i spend an average of $1,000 for repairs just to maintain it (not restore it). yet for some reason, i still won't give this baby up.
Thanks,
Arnold

I bet money it is your ignition switch plug on the back of where you put the key in. That thing goes bad in 928's all the time and you NEVER, EVER know what it is going to do to the car. I have seen the strangest things happen when that goes bad and there is no rhyme or reason to it AT ALL!
As to maintenance costs, I don't think I have spent $1000/year on all of mine combined. You can't count tires, and brakes in that kind of an assessment in my view and if you take those out (and maybe take batteries out of the equation too) I bet I am not even close and I have SIX to maintain!
Lets see I have had my cars starting 12 years ago but have added as I have gone along... Had a PSD pump in the '94 GTS, cruise control in the '92 GTS, A/C in the '88, '92, and '81, but those never cost that much (we didn't go in and replace everything that it might be hoping to figure it out...we looked for the big stuff and then topped up w/ refrigerant and moved on), steering rack in the '88, and that is about it... Everything else has been worn tires, brake discs and or pads, and restoration type stuff. Yea, I am knocking one wood RIGHT NOW!
Good luck with this and be sure to keep us posted on the final outcome.

I've heard this can happen if
The heated rear window switch is pushed in and does not pop back out again.
or
The heared rear window timer relay can stick in the on position.
Both causes give the same symptom - +12v is fed into the ignition circuits from the Power to the Heated rear window which is direct from the battery. This keeps the car running when you turn off the ignition.
Once the engine has been stopped disconnecting the battery normally resets the relay, but if the button is stuck in it needs to be pulled back out.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll get this info to my mechanic but i'm in no hurry at the moment. I love his car, but nowadays this baby is a luxury i can't indulge in.
I'll keep the battery disconnected coz even when i remove the fuel pump fuse and set it back in, the stop light on the dash and the hazzard lights (from the emergency brake) are on. Both warnings always disappeared after touching the brake pedal and releasing the emergence brake..except now of course.
James...six 928s!! damn..that's awesome...and a little scary lol. you must have gotten yours in good condition already. Back in 91, my car had only 75K miles, the engine was still good and the body still intact...but, everything else went one by one...from what i remember - cooling system, exhaust, idling problems, front/rear shocks, timing belt, splash pan, door locks, sunroof motor (which still didn't open), alternator and more. Back in 96, i was driving on the highway and suddenly the accelerator stopped working! pushed the pedal and nothing! all these problems and i still won't get rid of it. we might need therapy lol.
Jon in Oz...i lived in Sydney from 2005 to mid 2007 and i was shocked how many 928s i saw there. i must have seen 5 or 6, which always put a smile on my face. maybe, one of them was yours?
take care all. keep in touch.
