Default The Seat Dilemma

I have a seat dilemma, my front seats are in bad shape in my 84. The last re-cover quote I got was for 20 hours of labor at $55, does sound right? The total was about $2k for the pair of front seats.

Now the 84' with the 16 valve is at best a $6k car right? I think for $2k I could maybe find a parts car with decent seats!!!!!

I would like to find some "gently used ones", but that search has been on-going for at least the past 4 months to no avail.

I guess I am just venting here, but if anyone has some suggestions, throw them out there................am I just being a cheap bastard, or should I be able to find some used seats for a fraction of the $2k to re-cover?

There are several places that sell replacement seat covers. It's really not a terribly complicated task to remove the old covers and install new ones. You can get hog ring pliers from Harbor Freight, which is about the only specialty tool you'll need. I think you could get a pair of new covers for quite a bit less than $2k.

Actually depends on where you get the hides and if the foam underneath is in good shape.

Based upon your location I would suggest talking with Rob Budd, he knows these cars inside and out, maybe he can offer a good solution.

Rob Budd? Do tell................how do I get a hold of him?

My foams are good, the leather is not so good.

It is unlikely that you will ever find the words "parts car" and "gently used" in the same sentence.

Hey Paul

Sorry I didn't bring up your name, I thought you may still be taking a break and not really accepting new stuff just yet. Are you back full time again?

I had my seats re-done by Rob at the leathershop (BTW, he's in GA this week.) I am very satisfied with the results.

Dude, nothing mixed about the messages that I put out. I said I would take a break, which I did. And I said that once I got back I would mostly concentrate on seats and steering wheels, plus those parts that I designed and are exclusive to me, and that is exactly what I am doing.

Paul,

How do you find the early style seat to redo? I bought a set of the skins from 928 Specialists many years ago and had my mechanic put them on for me... He said, "NEVER AGAIN on an early style seat!" He said those seats are 2X or 3X more difficult to deal with than the later seats... and in my opinion not quite as comfortable either! When we do the '84 in the lipstick we can either switch to the newer style or you can fight w/ my old ones...I am easy...whatever you prefer on that on Paul!

Hey James,

I do find the early style a bit more challenging, but only for the fact that I have less experience with them. 9 out of 10 sets I do are for the later styles.
I am doing very stock ones for Roger in his Weissach and another for Brad at the same time, so it's no real problem for me. But if you do prefer the later style, I do have some in stock

We should probably do those later ones then... That way I can get you all the other ancillary parts you will need and you can do it all at once and then I can just do a full switch out of everything and send any/all cores back to you that you may need.

We WILL TALK SOON!

Oh, I don't know about that...............it seems that lately on CL and Ebay I have seen a bunch of nice looking cars where the owner just "gives up", saying it was running not it is not and I am not taking the time to fix it!!!! That is what I need to jump on................then I need to convince the wife that our 2 car garage can handle the 08 Beetle Convert, 07 Santa Fe, Porsche 928 and Triumph TR6, come on tell me guys; how do you slide the parts car by the wife

Has anybody ever tried these guys:

http://www.iggee.com/

They appear to be custom made "covers", as opposed to new skins.

I know I should just throw down for the $2k refin, but I was hoping to stumble upon the clean seat removed for a Track Car MOD.............or the "darn thing just quit running, please get it out of my driveway".

So thats my story.........
