sealant on cam covers with rubber gasket
I'm about to remove my cam covers after having just put them on with new gaskets a few weeks ago because they are leaking.
I had put a little sealant on the corners as per the factory method but now I think I want to put some permatex type sealant all the way around...maybe on both sides of the rubber gasket too...
What do you think? Am I just over reacting? I'll be damned if I want to have to redo it a third time so I want to make sure it's sealed up tight this time. I was very careful the first time to get it on correctly although the passenger side was a bitch, I removed the air pump valve thingy and the lift points and any other hardware that was in the way...this time I'll also be removing the fuel rails sinc the injectors need to be replaced for the Stage 3 kit anyway.
How about it, is there some secret to getting the rubber gaskets to seal well? A special pattern for tightening the bolts or something?

just the corners where the ends come up for the cam cap. I put some silicon in that area then rub it around the general area with a q-tip. Just a very light layer though

you could add some Yamabond to the cam covers it will be messy but thats probably where its leaking from, a porous casting. Also dont forget to add the extra sealing rings to the heads of the cam cover bolts this will add some extra crush to the bolts .

I'm doing this job right now, and I'd like to do it just once.

Not sure what ring he is talking about, but i would suggest replacing the 4 o-rings for the pair of breather angle's and the 2 caps on the opposite side cam cover. Replace them now, they will weep later.

My 89 does not have them either. The late 86 document mentions them as a "repair". A 90 S4 I worked on had them. I could not tell if they were factory or added later.

Is that just a washer of some sort with a inside diameter that matches the bolt? Ill have to check mine...i have slight weep from one corner and i have used the sealant as well. I dont want it leaking on my coated exhaust..it looks tooooo nice!

So Roger, if you read this before I get you on the phone, that's what I'm talking about

Craig and Mike - working on it.
So this means on the 85 & 86 cars that we have an O ring under the head of the bolt and also below the washer?
Checking on availability now.

Here's a quote from earlier in that post:

Just back tracked on the N0138112 number and as Bill indicates it supercedes to the 900 123 144 30 and I have a ton of them in stock so no problem.
Mike,
Your 12 will ship with your parts today.
Craig,
Sending you 12 and send back those washers you do not need.
Thanks Bill
