Hi,
I am looking at removing the intake on my '90 S4 to replace all the various (LOTS) of things under there that are falling apart. I was thinking about upgrading to the GTS breather system but would like to know if it it worth the
xtra? cost and what the pros & cons are. I would also like some advise on what parts you actually need to avhieve this. One supplier I have looked at has a lot of 'no thanks' for various parts and I get confused over which are necessary.
Many thanks,
Myles Garmonsway

There is difference between '92 GTS and '93-95 GTS. If you are thinking about geting kit form 928 Specialists for example it will be later style. All parts needed gets expensive quickly. I would look into how to make similar gains using normal hardware and auto parts store stuff.

I made the conversion to my '89GT because of an oil ingestion issue during spirited driving. Oil would pool in the intake after shutting down and on restart would burn, sending a plume of smoke out the exhaust. I burned a lot of oil during the spirited driving too.
The parts are not expensive. You need hoses, another venting elbow for the left side cam cover and a new oil filler neck. If memory serves me, that's about it. I bought a used elbow from Devek.
My oil ingestion issue is gone and I use about a quart/1000mi when driving with enthusiasim; which is most of the time.
If you are going to refresh the stuff under the intake, I highly recommend the conversion.
Cheers,

Errka got it. 928 Specialist does have a kit for the job. It is late model GTS oil filler neck. I rolled my own using a blend of used and new from Devek.
Mike Schmidt has a good write up on the breather system for the interested student.

Quick question: can this upgrade be done without removing the intake or is it necesary to remove the intake. Can't quite make it out from the setup.

I have noticed that the driver's side cam cover on pre-GTS cars usually is the first to leak. Venting the left-side cam seems like a good idea. To do the upgrade you
- need to remove the intake as there is a new different breather hose from the MAS elbow to the oil filler neck
- need to remove the left-side cam cover to install the breather adaptor
- replace the S4-style oil filler neck with the GTS-style filler neck
- reseal the GTS filler neck with black RTV or it _WILL_ leak where the two sections mate (manufacturing defect.)

Yep. If you look closely you will see that the neck is composed of two pieces: the main body of the neck and a much smaller section with the threads for the oil cap and the two breather ports. You will see a seam all'round the neck just past the cap threads. If you flex the neck you will likely see that the two pieces are not well sealed. The 'cap' part of the neck will pull straight out of the main body. Clean up both sections with something that will remove dirt/grease etc (I use a citrus-based cleaner), rinse, dry, and reseal with black RTV.
