Default Running hot ? How hot is OK?

Driving around today my temp went over the second bar with the air on. It never has gotten this hot in stop and go traffic I think the S/C maybe blocking some of the air flow. If I turn the air off it gets down between one and two bars. My question is should I be concerned or is this a normal reading with in normal. I have the front Air fan on a relay so it runs when the car is on even without the air on. Any feedback?

Normal for most of us.

Shoot the top engine water outlet with the IR heat gun and get some numbers to go with first bar and second bar. Better reference, quantifiable info please.

Mine runs a third of the way north of the mark labeled 170 towards the next mark that doesn't have a label. It's about a hundred here today, and that reading's with AC on in city traffic. Must be the Water Wetter. I don't want to sound like MK's promos for Amsoil... But the Water Wetter really seems to help.

Dr bob, I agree on the Water Wetter.

The temps I usually run on the top/ bottom hoses after a drive in traffic are 174 top, 164 bottom +/- 5 degrees. It reads just below the last white line.

A GTS last week I did some cooling work on had the same numbers but showed above the white line on the guage.

I have water wetter in it already, I'll try the IR gun tomorrow, it never has run this hot before the S/C was installed. I'm wondering if I need a little more fan in the front. I am concerned about detonation.

I second the recomendation for an IR temp reading.

Maybe get some water wetterer

You say that it got this hot while driving? How fast? If so, you are f@cked if you get stuck in traffic. one thing you can do on the S cars is to make an air damn that goes along the bottom of the front opening, in between the radiator and the spoiler. It forces the air through the radiator instead of allowing alot of it to spill down under the car where the pressure is lower.

When I'm driving it's not a problem just idling in traffic and it takes a while to cool down after I get going a a steady pace.

what a bunch of whoosies....
drive the car...
if steam starts coming out from under the hood....
park the car.....
wait - drive again.....
then change those old head gaskets - they were weak anyway

+928 on the ir gun...
shoot the temps at the hoses and radiator inlet-outlet.
The gauges aren't the most accurate in the world.

Now that I rebuilt my a/c compressor and charged up - the ghost is running hotter in town - just above the second bar....
as soon as i get above 90 mph she cools back down...
just goes to show that going too slow is dangerous to your cars health.
I'm ok with the in town heat - at 105 deg in town - it doesn't keep rising, and that, I believe, is what you need to worry about.
Maybe it is time to install dual electric fans though.....

Well you know the next ? what dual fan's should I get? I think there is not enough air flow with th S/C blocking the middle of the radiator in this Florida heat.

I thought that fans came with the Murph kit. Do the 32v S cars have viscous fans or electric fans when stock?

Default Update

I just removed my radiator and looked inside with a opti-scope. I was expecting to see a lot of corrosion but to my surprise it looks super clean. I could only look up a few rows but it looked new. Could there be a blockage a little further up I am going to get it cleaned by a radiator shop but it seems ok.
I heard you cannot run a rod through this 86 radiator so taking it apart is not the way to go.
This all stems from getting hot while in traffic with the air on. I still think it is hitting the S/C blocking the air flow.
Has anyone done a better pusher fan for the front and if so how about a link.
Thanks
Mark

Did you ever shoot it with an ir thermometer? If so, what did you find?

Any one use or know where to get a radiator comb. I would like to straighten out some of the crushed fins or is there another way to do this?.
Still waiting on the front fan feedback!
