bad gas

I've been putting straight regular in the car with no problems at all. Well against my better judgment I filled up at a BP the other day, complete with signs on the pump that say "may contain up to 10% ethanol." Don't get me started on that ****-poor idea...
If I hadn't been running on fumes I wouldn't have done it. Now for the first time I've got audible knock on low-rpm acceleration, yay. Looks like I got bitten by crap gas and now I have to drive gently until this tank is done. I have filled up at this BP before, but never again. I'm thinking Chevron silver at a minimum from now on, and going to run a bottle of Techron through it. What do you use?

I'm interested. It should show down on power a bit but generally it shouldn't knock/ping any worse than it did on no-ethanol fuel. Pump some over to the [Saturn/Riding Mower/Chainsaw/whatever] and top the 928 up with premium to see if that helps. Our sucky fuel season is actually our 'winter' such as it is, but colder weather also means my car isn't as sensitive.

Feds passed a bill that mandates 2x the ethanol that previous version included. ADM to the rescue again! Floods will drive up the cost of ethanol production while shorting food and feed markets. Goota love the way we all work together for the common good.

Mark,
Every station I have been to in Illinois has had that 10% ethanol for quite a while. Now, I still have plenty of issues that I am working out, but the engine has been sound (knock on wood).

In MO it is now a law of all things that all fuel eccept premium will contain 10% ethenol, I also ran into some running and pinging problems, and had to reset the timing and fuel mixture to get the shark to run better. Also have lost about 10% on milage on my DD as well- wich is just an old escort - but has dropped from 32-33 mpg on hwy to around 29mpg on hwy - don't dbl check my math - too much beer tonight ;-0

I could drain the tank but I now have about 18 gallons in there and no container big enough. Oh well, it will be gone soon enough. Once I've burned a bit I'll top it off with premium like Bob suggested and things will be a lot better. I really hate the ethanol idea, dumb to promote it, and just costs a lot more over time. Not to mention the new filters they have to install mean the gas pumps are sloooooowwww.

It may have just been some crappy, bottom-of-the-tank gas, not the ethanol. Try adding some gas stabilizer when you add the premium.

doubtful it was the ethanol giving you problems.
probably bad bottom of the tank crud issues,as GAZ relayed.....the alky may have cleaned some crud loose and started the knocking issue?
Have you ever drained/cleaned the tank since acquiring your 928?
(I've run 12.5:1 CR with 91 octane pump gas, 35 degrees all in timing and no knocks with Lucas fuel stabilizer--you might try some Lucas?)

I have not drained/cleaned the tank since I bought it and I do have a couple minor things to take care of back there, so I may tackle that. This was on 87 octane regular gas, which I have had no trouble with until now. My engine is US low-compression, so regular should be just fine unless there's enough buildup inside that higher octane would help. But it runs very clean, so it can't be that bad. Hopefully it's just this tank and some premium and a bottle of techron will help a lot.
