Sadly I have had personal negative experience with detailer. The detailer I used even had a Porsche 928 in their TV commercials. Of course they are now out of business, but I am sure working somewhere else under a different company name.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE really do your home work if you hire a so-called professional to buff/polish your Porsche. Not all are bad, but some hire kids.

Personally I believe detailing is like mechanical work, make sure you qualify the person working on your car before you let them have at it. Paint/Trim/Glass cost a ton to repair and all can be easily damaged in the hands of the wrong person.

Griot's orange pads are the bomb. I use their Machine polish system with great results. They have a #4now which is great for very light swirl marks. Toolsource.com is a good place to get the Porter Cable.

With lower temps and higher humidity thats possibly a good option... here in Phoenix I have a hard time drying the car before it drys itself (streaky of course). I have to actually be spraying the lower portions of the car while I'm drying the roof - its a real pain actually...
So I spray just on the area I'm actually using the clay 'bar' - you are right it needs washing off after that too.
I don't do this anything like as often as I'd like - and at this time of year the only real option is really early in the am (5:30am start or so).

The only thing I can tell you is I spent one day using 4-different pads, 3-different lotions and potions and it came out looking great. Take your time and read the instructions!

I was planning on taking this on for my S4, and at the advice of friends was going to practice on my old chevy pickup, but after thinking it over, I'm going to pay a local detailer guy to do it for me.
For the money, time, and piece of mind, its well worth it to me to pay him to take care of the S4.
Good thread, I'm looking forward to reading more. -Ed

Thought I'd bring this post back up.
For those of you who wonder what can be done with a Random Orbital and the right products, here's a few pictures of my neihbors jeep with before after pics.
Note that I didn't go further than the initial polish, to do the job right you should follow up with a swirl remover and then wax the car.
