stereo sound upgrade
Well there's a million threads on this, but a quick search didn't turn up what I was looking for. I discovered that my factory fader control actually works with my new-ish Alpine head unit, and I got actual real sound coming from the rear speakers! At this point I don't want to mount amps or bass boxes anywhere, so has anyone gotten decent sound coming from the stock speaker locations? My head unit is an Alpine CDA-7892 and I'd like to fill the sound out without breaking the bank or deviating from the stock setup.
Recommendations on speakers? Is there anything I can do with the locations to improve their sound output with sound baffling/deadening material? I honestly haven't looked up the power output of the unit so I don't know what will work well with it, and I figured there are lots better experts around here.

I too have an '83 and I am in the midst of a restoration. Likewise, I have been looking for some speaker and sound system ideas. This is what I am planning because my stock speakers were shot. Also, as you know, there isn't much mounting depth for some bigger and badder speakers in the original locations. My plan is as follows:
Eliminate rear speakers all together, who is going to sit back there anyway? I plan a four channel setup with a blaupunkt powered subwoofer.

There will be 3.5" round speakers in the original door locations, and then I will mount 4" round speakers (you can go bigger, I am just cheap) into the door map pocket, since I don't use them anyway. The map pocket is very deep and gives flexibility for mounting deep speakers as well as hiding the crossovers if you go that route. The subwoofer will go somewhere in the spare tire well/trunk because it's relatively flat. Also, the blaupunkt I am looking at turns on and off on it's own, it senses a signal from it's input.
Hope this helps,

Mark,
I have the front door speakers with the perforated holes in my front door panels. Here is my write-up from last year. I hope this will be useful:

I replaced all speakers in my GTS with MBQuarts a couple of years ago. Used the PO's Kenwood amplifier along with a Becker 220. Was never really happy. I swapped the hu and amp Ryan's Alpine setup and the results are amazing. The MBQuarts never sounded so good. Zero distortion at full volume. Everything sounds great, Classical, Jazz, Blues. All of it. Can't wait to build an enclosure for the 10" sub.

Three Wheelin'
I am in the process of correcting a lot of things on my 83. It came w/a Sony Explode head unit that the Ipod interface plugs into nicely on the rear. I am replacing the stock door speakers w/ Infinity Kappa 5 1/4 components w/the large speaker in the front lower part of the door panel where the carpet is; plenty of room there. The tweeter is going where the original 3 1/2 - 4 inch speakers were behind the perforated section. I am replacing the rears w/ Infinity Kappa 6 1/2 3 ways, but I am using the raised speaker grills out of a later car I got off Dave & Jeannie's driveway at SITM. This will give me more room for the larger speaker. This is the same setup I have in my 951 and it sounds great. I have an Alpine amp in the 951, but I plan on recycling an older Kenwood for the 928 and put a Infinity BassLink I got off ebay in the spare tire hole.

My wife saw this thread and I got in trouble. I bought the wheels so the next thing I buy has to be for her, oops. But then I'll definitely be looking into improving things and I'm thinking a simple speaker upgrade with some sound deadener (non moisture absorbing) in the rear panels. The head unit has a high power output so it's more than capable of driving sound for my needs, so a separate amp won't be necessary.
