Default Pioneer 4"x6" TS-A4672R Speakers works well on OBs ($79)

Future reference for those interested in upgrading their existing factory Blaupunkt speakers in the doors for OBs. My 84 928S came with the perforated hole type speaker located behind the dash panels. There is not much depth to accomodate most modern 4"x6" speakers. I was finally able to find this set that worked (you will need an $10 adapter plate to retrofit the mounting holes behind the door panel):

I stayed with the rear factory speakers as I did not have the time to tear out the rear panels (more time consuming).

I am going to go with a smaller powered sub-woofer to "round off" the sound. I am not an audiophile. Therefore, any small powered subwoofer will work for me, The installer recommended either a Kenwood KSC-SW1 or Bazooka 6" (located in the rear hatch area behind the seats) for next weekend's project:

Sweet - good to know since I'll be addressing this very soon.

What head unit are you using?

EDIT - now you got me thinking

These are only 2/16" thicker:

This is the head unit that I am using: Kenwood Excelon KDC-X491
CD receiver with MP3, WMA, & AAC playback. $179. It comes with a USB port in the front which is what I like most about this unit (I use a non-Ipod MP3 player).

Thanks for posting this info. Where/how do you get the adapter plates? (what do you ask for?)

The adapter plate came from the installer. It appeared to be something that you can easily get from a car stereo shop. I can take a pic if you like when I visit them again next week.

This are the folks whom I got it from:

Ask for Dan or Paul if you are interested in ordering it from them. Tell them that is Andrew who brought in his white 928 for the install this afternoon. The job for installing the head unit ($45 install fee) and the front door speakers ($55 install fee) took an 1-1/2 hours.

ACG... this is what I put in mine for bass. sounds awesome, and is very shallow. fits in the back either right under the rear seats, or up against the back. also, has the amp enclosed, so its an all in one box.

Tim: that is a nice looking subwoofer. Unfortunately, it is a little pricey for me at $499

I went back to the stereo shop today and bought the Kenwood KSC-SW1 subwoofer. The Kenwood head unit with the new front speakers and the subwoofer sounds great! The Kenwood subwoofer was laid flat behind the rear seat. There is still alot of room left in the hatch area. I decided against the Bazooka. Even the smallest 6" Bazooka took up quite a bit of the hatch area. I will post pics after the detailer returns the car from the ClearBra project.

I spoke with the installer today. He cannabalized the original mounting plate off the factory Blaupunkt 4"x6" front speakers. He cut the speaker-cone off the mounting plate. He transferred the mounting plate to the new front speakers and utilized the same mounting holes.

I agree, it is pricey. I bought mine before going overseas... I was home on leave, and had some extra cash... (actually had a spending goal, not a budget... lol). I managed to actually get it for $400, which was a pleasant suprise when I was expecting 5. is the kenwood woofer self powered?

answered my own Q. yup, same idea as the infinity I have. I like the self powered enclosures. makes it nice and neat. I have been thinking about having the one I have covered in leather so it matches the interior perfectly. i dunno.
