It seems ridiculous. I'm pretty tall but I doubt my arm could reach up and close the door. Plus the doors so heavy that little piston probably isn't going to keep it up long. When the seals wear down it will crash down on you. Once the plastic gets weak in door arms you'd try to pull the door down and the entire arm rest would come off.

Its more like a movie car then one I'd want to have.

That's the SGS Gullwing. SGS stands for Styling Garage Senefeld - a suburb of Hamburg, I believe.

The car went to a nightclub owner in Japan. Much has been written about this, including here...

The doors are actually very light, its the crash bars inside them (which euro cars didnt have) that make them feel so heavy.

I like both those cars personally. As a wheelchair user, those cars would be MUCH, MUCH easier for me to get in and out of!

How about an actuator to do it for you?

Just put a hang down pull strap with a VERY secure mounting spot and if needed a snap on the end to snap it in the up position when you have the door closed... Piece of cake...

The Gullwing door was used by Mercedes in ........drum roll.......1954-1957 for the 300SL Coupe ....Yea real modern and cutting edge But yes an attention getter. LOOK AT ME !! LOOK AT ME !!

If ALL cars had it we would eliminate door dings and unless you are extra tall it would be more convenient for everyone! There must be fear of getting out in a roll over, or other side impact constraints that we don't know about... Or it might just be more costly to engineer them to keep working right when thusly oriented.

Cutting off most of the roof on a unibody car requires huge amounts of engineering to restore some of the strength.

The original Mercedes gullwing door only came about because they needed an engineering answer to a chassis design issue.
