The air intake tubes on my 1984 are tired and need replacing. Has anyone ever done anything other than original equipment to replace them? Somthing that will do the job a little better and look a little different?

Roger has some neat ones in stock. He should be back tomorrow from SITM. I don't have any pictures of them so I'm not really any help.

There are some Mercedes tubes that are a popular replacement. IIRC they are very inexpensive compared with the 928 tubes with the inverted megaphones. That may be what Roger has available. If so, they are a good fit both in function and appearance.

what do these look like? pics???
Im using just straight brake ducting tubing from the racer supply store. 3" tubing with metal ribbing. nice and straight. the attachment is a little hard, as you need to use rubber adapters like the r'cers use to make it look nice.

I purchased mine at Sharktoberfest two years ago from some guy that had a few sets. They were $60 IIRC and they seem to be holding up pretty good

I used some neoprene wrapped fiberglass vacuum tubes fitted with the original GTS ends. Look rather similar to the GTS foams but should hold up better. I also added plastic inserts for the timing belt cover ports. Cost was about $70.

Alan: Your intake tubes looks really good!
Can you give sources for what you bought or at worst, how to find some with specific sizes needed, etc. Thanks in advance for the info!

Alan,
Those tubes look great!
I think the Neoprene is preferred as it should be able to tolerate the heat of the engine bay. Again, very nice setup!

I'm curious.. no-one's mentioned the trumpets?
They're venturi's, which makes for no flow restriction, and nice laminar flow on the filter/MAF end of them. Venturis are a standard engineering technique for dealing with turbulence, and for accurately measuring pressure without reducing flow rate, at least if I recall my fluid dynamics classes correctly.
Given the number of posts about turbulence causing MAF and mixture inconsistencies, surely it makes more sense to go with the smoother flow?

LOL..."Venturi's". I remember when there was a BIG discussion over this.
Basically, they are for noise suppression, not flow. The GTS tubes proves that, as they went with the straight open tubes being insulated
There have been several posts on this subject and all you have to do is a search. There are many versions of intake tubes, most being DIY's.
I did mine for less than $20 for each car years ago.
