Default Vacuum unit on distributor

Hi,

I am wondering what this unit does? (on my 928S MY81 ROW-model) - Its shown at page 28-10 in the WSM.

The vacuum hose was deatteched and I am curiouslyif it has made any harm.

Thanks in advance,

KR Christian

There are 2 lines to the distributor. 1 for advance and 1 for retarding. If unhooked one ore the other not working. Check where disrtibutor is set. It should be about in the middle. If it is not then someone retimed for no advance. This is how I found mine the third time going to smog ('81 u.s. auto), it would not pass (just over limits, and it had passed before). Turned out the advance unit had fallen off and was not working at all. Reattached, restabbed distributor, and retimed and all was just fine (along with great improvement in gas mileage).

Hi Joejoe, thanks for your reply.

It was the line shown with a red arrow at this picture:

I wouldn't expect this to cause any lasting harm, just poor performance/mileage. IIRC that has to be disconnected and plugged when setting timing, maybe someone just forgot to plug it back in?
