Default Rear Hatch - Won't Stay Closed

My rear hatch has always sat a little too hight for the rear wiper to catch and work properly, but it always closed and stayed closed.

The other day I was investigating why with a fellow Rennlister and 928 owner and we couldn't figure it out. It was one of those, look at it a really long time and hope an answer might come diagnostic session.

Today, my hatch won't stay closed. It just pops right back up without any release, key or anything. If I can get it down all I have to do is give it a light tug and it pops right back open.

Ideas?

Sometimes the latch can stick. Lube latch and cylinder and cycle key several times. Also make sure the hatch release is not engaged.

I have seen the same symptom. Check the white plastic thingie on the male end of the latch on the hatch. It engages with the female part of the latch in the body. This is the part that is actuated by the locki when you turn the key, and it hinges at the pin in the male part of the latch. It wears where it rubs against the female part of the latch everytime it engages or disengages. Finally, it reaches a point of no longer having enough material to actually engage and appears to be rounded. Replace it. Quick fix. Get one or two from 928 Intl. and get a new pin too. Be careful to not lose the spring under it when you pull it out and pay attention to how that spring is installed. Re-installing it is the fun part; some guy at Porsche probably sat around thinking of ways to irritate home mechanics by designing that spring so that you would invent new swear words trying to reinstall it without removing the latch from the hatch. That is the proper way to reinstall it, but takes more time. Use a drift to locate the spring and the white plastic thingie in the hole for the pin. Then ease the pin into the hole pushing the drift out the other side.

I admit it,

I too have suffered from Pre-Mature Ehatchulation!!

Had to replace receiver, and then the nylon catch on the hatch side.
Mine deployed at 80mph on the 79. Hatch popped into the wide open position at 3rd coast a couple years ago. Sounded like someone opened the door on an airplane at 30K feet!!
