Default Quote for LSD install

I just got off the phone with a mechanic that want to charge me $2000.00 to install the LSD. And that is if I bring the tranny to them.

I guess I will be doing to reading and install it myself.

For $2000 I can buy a later model tranny with frieking LSD. Well the phone conversation did not end up too well...

He obviously did not WANT to do it. But if he HAD to do it he was going to get paid !! His time, his business , he can ASK what ever he wishes. No need to be angry or insulted by it.

Think of this as a learning opportunity.

gratiously I reserve the right to be insulted or get angry (even though that rarely happens) when someone is trying to rip me off.

AO: I have not taken a car to a mechanic since 1997. Stupid me for calling to get a price qoute to start with. I will get herrr done myself.

At least by doing it yourself you SAVE $2,000 ...which is $4,000 you have to earn before taxes just to have the money to pay someone $2,000 There is a good chance the mechanic has never installed a slip in a 928 and wanted to be sure that he did not sell himself short , especially if he warranties his work. The moment he opens up the differential HE OWNS the gearbox any noises etc. are going to be blamed on HIS work, no matter what the cause.

find a shop who knows how to do it.

Its only a 4 -6 hour job if i remember correctly.

If its putting an early LSD in a later trannie, that could cost more as somethings need to be machined or changed.

It's his shop. I guess you've never started a job and found out it was a whole lot more complicated than you thought it was going to be. I was miffed when the old guy on the line at Sears wouldn't even look at my car for an alignment and he had the Hunter machine, but it's not worth it, just move on. I feel your pain, but I think you need to make at least one more phone call before you call him names.

I'm with you Giovanni. I think that is ridiculous. If he didn't want to do it, say so instead of quoting an insultingly high price. I would feel guilty charging someone to do that if they actually agreed to it.

While we're on the topic, if you do go ahead and do it yourself take some pictures and document it! I will be doing this mod sometime soon as my racer doesn't have a limited slip. I'm sure the hardest part is just setting the backlash and such.

Saturday morning at Willow Springs I broke the weld on the forward shift rod. Took it the car over to the shop just outside the gate ,Dave nice old guy builds Mustangs and Cobras, he looked down in the console and decided his TIG welder torch was just too big...drove to 4 other shops 20 mile trip with only 1/2 the gears. Finally found a guy who had a MIG welder , saw it in the corner of his auto repair business. Asked if he could repair the weld ....a 10 minute job maybe .. "NOPE I do not do that kinda work , am too busy and we close early on Saturday " He turned and walked away. I was not real happy but it was his business.

Setting it up IS the job, pulling one out with the trans out of the car takes all of 10 minutes ...

iirc, it's not a trivial job to set it up correctly, and if it needs a rebuild like most used units do, it's special washers, clutches, bearings, etc, etc... iirc, sometimes you can pull the gas tank to get to it, but it's kinda tight/but better than pulling the trans if you can. still several hrs just to R&R the bugger though. and don't forget it's a business - ins, lease, utils, warrenty, tools, advertising, accounting, etc, etc...

iirc, I paid around 500 for my unit and around 3x that much to get it installed properly/rebuilt, etc by a master 928 wrench who gives me insano good pricing - so 2k doesn't sound that bad in some respects.

sometimes, ya gotta look at the fine print too - I know a lot of DIY'ers that spent a fortune on shops, tools, have plenty of time to burn, etc - just so they don't have to pay anyone else to work on their stuff.

that's ok, but at some point ya gotta be honest and say you'd rather DIY cause you can and you enjoy it - not cause it's cost effective and cause all shops are ripoffs.

all you need to do is unbolt at the CV joints and remove the rear cover, then pull out the old stuff (this does take some wrenching) . you dont need the transmission out. its realatively a straigth forward job.

Two ways to shift ...with half a jack handle on the shifter (**** removed) you grab with two hands and move the rear shift rod....or vice grips on the loose front bracket you can hold it and push against the rod and get Rev ,2 ,and 4 , use a pry bar on the rear rod bracket moves it forward for 1,3, and 5 either way takes two hands and some time. I drove it back to the hotel Saturday night then Sunday back to Willow to do Tech Inspections and work with two students. Then the 110 mile drive home

I haven't got time for a long answer but get it wrong and you will be looking for a new tranny, so there is that aspect to it also, the bolts cost about $120 alone, I changed mine as I was worried about doing any bolt up that tight twice, you will need a good torque wrench and btw when these cars were new there was a stack of warranty claims as the bolts came loose.
