I know of 7 in the Tulsa area alone. I've seen 4 at one time at Charlesworth Motors. How about 10 in Oklahoma?

There are still probably 15,000 or so 928s registered in the US (the Porsche PCNA numbers are now a few years old) .
Jim-There are quite a few cities in Oklahoma with ZIP codes that start 73XXX. Might want to see what that search yields. My previous home was in Edmond, 73003, for example.

Jason-As Dennis mentioned, they're out there - just not active on RL. I've seen quite a few in/out of Bob Dumont's shop in OKC, but don't know of any RL users from there.

That said, I'd bet there are more 928's in the DFW metroplex alone than in the entire state of Oklahoma.

BTW- Porsche928guy - GREAT BUY! As others have said, you just bought a supercharger with a FREE 928 attached.

Glad I came to this thread to late. I could have / would have bought the car to take the motor out of it and put it in my race car! LOL!! Then taken the UNDERPOWERED motor in my race car and put it in that car and sold it again...and got most of my money out of it! LOL! Thanks for keeping me out of this one!

I saw a red 840i on the road the other day and started thinking SERIOUSLY about getting one of those too! I have not checked in to the prices, but I bet they are a fair bit less than a GTS and were built around the same time as the GTS's! My wife even liked the 8 series pretty well.

She has been driving a C5 FRC the last week or so and says it sucks compared to the 928's! Not nearly as comfortable she says and since she is not looking to go fast that is all that really matters to her. I bet she would LOVE an 840/850. I bet the 840 is less headache than an 850!

If anyone has experience with these I'd love to hear it!

One of our New England participants from New York bought his GT (or GTS? Don't recall) after a very very bad experience with an 8 series. He regaled us with it at one of the regional gatherings. I haven't owned or driven one, but did the due-dilligence research when I was planning to buy one. The passenger compartment is really cramped. Pixels in the dash display often go bad, the fuel economy particularly on the 850 is incredibly bad....you can distinguish between the different engines by the air intake....don't recall the other tidbits. IIRC, there was a common mechanical issue that finally scared me off-- that and the general beat condition of most of the cars I came upon. The M8/csi variant was still commanding a big premium last I checked.

The problem with them is the same problem the 928 has. They were awesome cars for their day they just never really caught on for whatever reason (perhaps the high ticket price). Then they get passed around and maintenance gets neglected so they seem like bad cars but in actuality really good cars they just need TLC.

I think the 840 (V8) is probably the one to go with. The 850 is the 12 cylinder version and it doesn't produce that much more in the way of hp and torque but it would be cool have 12cyl car. Dash pixels going out are a BMW thing not just an 8 series thing. The 4.0 V8 and later 4.4? were also put in the 7 series if I'm not mistaken so there are a lot of those engines out there and I've seen quite a few with a ton of miles. Also, I'm thinking the earlier 4.0 engine had some sort of problem that was specific to a certain block range which they fixed as of a certain year (I'm thinking 93 or so). If I get one I'm shooting for a 97.

It's a good thing you're used to 928s then. The 8-series makes the 928 look cheap to maintain, but it IS a phenomenal car when it's right. Problem is just like 928s, their values have fallen and people buy them who can't afford to maintain them. Find a good one and you will love it, but there are damn few good ones out there - I've tried. Put it this way, if I remember right there are 12 separate motors with associated electrical nightmares in the driver's seat alone. The HVAC makes the 928 vacuum-operated system look like simplicity itself. If you're going to jump, look long and hard and pay the money to a specialist who knows them to do a thorough PPI. A good one is an incredible GT, comparable to a 928 but more luxurious. A bad one will make you want to push it off a cliff.

YUCK! I don't need that much trouble! I know 928's, I'll just get some more of those. I will put up with that kind of crap to have a black (or usually it is chromed) horse on the hood and the "Ferrari" script on the tail, but I WON'T put up w/ that for the BMW roundel!

Thanks for bringing me back to my senses guys! I don't know WHAT I was thinking! Clearly lost my mind for a moment there!

Finally got back to the house in OK yesterday afternoon. The car performed pretty flawlessly but has developed a squealing supercharger belt. Already have the wheels polished up and they look great! Will need to do some adjustments to the trans as it shifts very early if you're not all over it. Ran into that monsoon between St. Louis and MO/OK border that some of you may have experienced going to SITM on Friday...but most of you were probably already there.

I'll need to do a TP/WP job at some point soon just to be safe. If dinner/lunch and brews were involved is there anyone in the DFW crowd that would help me do it? Never done one before and don't want to screw it up on this car.

8-series is kinda the same format as a late-model 928, but good lord as if our cars were not already heavy, even the 840i model was up around 4000 pounds and down a full liter on displacement.

850csi would fix the power issue, but makes the weight worse and lordy now you gotta maintain the thing...
