Default christmas tree dash

i was driving along minding my own bussines in my 79 euro auto and all of a sudden all the warning lights on the dash lit up and the volt meter dropped like a rock at first i thought i lost my alternator but further inspection showed it was still charging and the car got me home without the battery going dead about a 10 min drive any ideas where to start looking?
