Default Crank sprocket

Had planned on replacing front main seal but I cannot figure out how to get the crank sprocket off...

No room for a puller and nothing but plastic to pry against...

Clue me in please...how do you get this off?

Mitch,
I had a difficult time removing mine as well. I soaked it well with Kroil and then used a smaller two-arm puller with arms that just fit behind behind the sprocket (1 and 7 o'clock position if I remember correctly) and big, strong washer on the crankshaft snout for the pressure screw to push against. I used a c-clamp to keep the puller arms from spreading apart when the pulling pressure started to build.

Once the crank sprocket moved forward a bit, I was able to get my larger Snap On 2-arm puller in there to complete the removal. You will need to replace the rear thrust washer as it will get bent by the by the puller. These are readily available from the big three.

Take your time and use plenty of penetrating oil as you go.

Once the crank gear was off, I cleaned up the crankshaft with emory cloth and used anti-seize on the re-install.

Hope this helps.

If it moves a little great, then spray the shaft and tap it back and forth with a hammer, keep spraying and taping..!
If really stuck.. a wheel puller can be used but it will bend up the belt guide washer, (I had to make a custom short shaft out of threaded bar stock as I could not get my balancer or the gear off) anyway just get two new belt guide washers (I did on my ‘85).

Don't give up.. you'll get it

Just can't be easy...off to get a smaller puller

I briefly considered drilling a couple of holes and tapping the damn thing and thought better of it.

Thanks guys!

Mitch,

Measure the distance from the back of the crank gear to the front of the crankshaft so you get a puller with the correct length arms (long).

Got a small puller that just barely had long enough arms, but it did the job, one mangled thrust washer and no other harm.

I appreciate the assist.
