Hello all,
I bought a Porsche 928 S4 1989 a few months ago. The car was imported from Japan to Canada in 2004 and although it's in very good shape, most of its Japanese life maintenance history is missing.
In order to add to the pleasure of owning this car, I would like to retrieve its previous technical history, no personnal previous owner information.
I have a few clues that have been provided by a canadian Porsche dealer like the "trading partner number" (I suspect it may be the dealership number???): 9220000 and commission number: K01048.
Would someone know where to start this quest?

Porsche can tell you which dealership it was delivered to from the factory, and when, based on their database lookup of the VIN number.
That'll at least give you a starting point to inquire about service history at that dealer - which should give you some of the early info - if they can find the records from that far back.

The dealers usually do not release any information and have no reason to do so. Most "service" in Japan is next to ZERO !! Cars are only supposed to last 4 years there before they are recycled.

The local Porsche dealer is unable to provide more information since the computer system is not connected to those in Asia.
Would someone know an e-mail adress for the Porsche company where initial delivery information could be available?

So are you in Canada or USA? If in the USA have you successfully registered the car in the USA? It could be a heck of an expense or experience for you if you have not yet registered it in the USA...
Great cars '89 S4's! Why buy one from Japan though...there are a zillion of them in N. America...

I live in Canada.
To make a long story short, I bought the car in Canada from a canadian who imported it from Japan in 2004 (in Canada, any car 15 years and older can be imported with no questions asked about conformity).
Since I take care of al the mechanic and all the systems myself, I have a great interest about what was done on the car before it ended up in Canada. The car was noticeably well maintained over the past 19 years. It shows. I just want to build a log book that describes rigourously the history of this car...just for the fun of it. That breed of car deserves it!

Ah, got it now! That is good about the 15 year rule! Wish we had that here. I suspect the 20 year on EPA and the 25 year on DOT (actually I think I have that backwards) is not even known enough and even importing and old car would cause problems...just guessing...I have not tried that yet...

misousse, if you successful on tracking down your vehicle's service history in Japan, please post your method for doing so. There are a few of on Rennlist that own ex-Japanese cars that would be interested in learning about our cars' lives on that island across the ocean.

If you're wondering about maintenance...and you should...
I would want to know about: the timing belt, water pump and everything else related with a used car...How about receipts???

I bought my 86.5 in 2004 in Alberta and it had records with it. However they were in Japanese and I did have some luck in finding out the work done and such. The hard part was establishing dates as they use a different means of dating things in that country. I had the timing belt done anyway when I bought it and the car was shipped to my home after Milt and his crew at the Porsche dealer finished the work on it. Now my question to my fellow Japanese owners is this......Do your vehicles have all the corresponding labels associated with your car. Do you have the option sticker under the rear mat for example or the Porsche door label....stuff like that. I'm just curious because my 928 does not. On the door post on the drivers side is the paint code and a bar code label..........tnx Bill
