Angry Need an Air Conditioning Compressor

After attempting to recharge my a/c today with another 'lister, 3 cans of R12 pissed out of my a/c compressor.

Anyone have a used unit that still functions properly they wanna get rid of?

Thanks.

I feel your pain. Mine has a slow leak and I in the process to find out just how long this re-charge will last. Rob Edwards just bought a compressor ( I think), he can tell you where to buy a new one. Sorry, I know that doesn't help the wallet.

I will thanks! I also owe my friend some R12 that my car decided to vent into the ozone. That next hole you hear about has my name written all over it.

Anyone know which compressors are interchangeable over the 928 years?

Will it fit an '87 S4? I heard some years were different.

Have you contacted Griffiths.com?

Believe they were offering a Kuehl compressor kit in the $800 ball park.

From their website: "Comes with new Compressor & Clutch, pre-filled with R134a ester Oil; mounting Hardware; adapter Bracket already attached; new high pressure and low pressure "barrier" Hose lines; new Drier, o-rings and R134a charge port Adapters; detailed Instructions with pictures."

$800 is a little too rich for my blood at this moment. I'm going to settle for R12 after reading horror stories of going to R134A.

Sounds to me like you are living the R12 horror story right now. And that story is much worse than R134A.

I would convert to R134A, especially if you are buying a new compressor. Have you thought about replacing the shaft seal and body o-rings on your compressor instead of buying a new one? Those things, along with the little valves on the compressor blocks and o-rings are the only things that can make a compressor leak. Total cost for those parts is like $30. There are many sources of information on the disassembly of a Nippondenso 6E171 compressor. Or is the leak coming from the fittings that attach to the compressor?

Mongo, PM Rob Edwards regarding rebuilding the compressor. Not an easy thing to get right based on conversations with him. 800 sounds cheap after looking into all of the rebuilt parts through the vendors.

Andy.................we've been living w/R134a in Canada for many years now; it works very well.

As suggested, talk to Roger he knows the story well.............at least from my prospective

Research Griffiths on this site if required; much contreversy.

I believe Rob rebuilt the compressor on his '90? That compressor is a Nippondenso 10PA20 and is very different from the 6E171 found in the earlier models. I've rebuilt a 6E171, and while I would not say it's easy, it really is not that difficult either. It's definitely worth trying when new compressors are that expensive.

There's really no way to test a used compressor off the car, is there? Buying used could be a gamble, no?
