Default 4 door...

So!
Who has the skinny on the 1987 928 4 door?
Why it was built for Hans Prechter?
And was it a true factory one-off fabrication?
BTW
Where is it now?

^^^^^^

Interesting post, but I don't believe that was the ONLY 4 door 928 built. As I recall there was a 4 door built in '83 that featured the S4 front and rear ends on it! One of the distinguishing features of the '83 or '84 car was VERY STRANGE headlights... I guess it is possible that those were changed back to the normal 928 headlight but that would not explain why this car is said to be an '87 if it were the same car.

Oh, the ASC people indicated that this was not the only one, and in fact the feeling I got from them was they had built another one (I had been under the impression that they had built TWO of them, but I guess one was this gift from Porsche, then they built theirs) plus the very early 4 door with the S4 front and rear would make a total of 3...at least!

Another interesting tid bit, I was offered that car for $25,000 and passed on it! It was sold and with in two or three years I saw it at the auction (on TV) where it went for $44k! How about that! I could have nearly doubled my money! The problem is I would have NEVER sold it!

James:

You are mixing Ferry Porsche's two-door four-seater 928-4 with the ASC 4-door conversion - which had suicide doors. Totally different cars, totally different time, totally different people.

I spoke with Ferry Porsche's former Chauffeur and company fleet manager when I was in Germany in February, and asked him about the 4-door. He said they never had a such car in their fleet.

The funny lights on Ferry Porsche's 928-4 were early projection lights, which never saw production - unlike the different style bumpers and lights.

If you do a search here - this topic has been discussed many times - you'll find lots of interesting information and pictures.

IIRR Karl Ludvigsen's Excellence Was Expected has some info on ASC 4 doors. There were more than one and they were meant to be study for expansion of 928 model lineup. At the time factory was trying to justify keeping 928 in production and making longer wheelbase model was one idea how to sell more of them. Another similar idea was cabrio version. Prototype(s) were build around same time as 4 doors were done. Carbrio was thought of again in '89 but quickly worsening economic situation killed this idea as well.

Thanks all, will continue to read.
Nicole,
Dump the Chauffeur, ply the Paint Shop boys of that era with a meal at the Post and a Pils or 10.
Noticed the 4 door again when Jean "Mean Jean" Jennings brought it up in her piece, Vile Gossip, Automobile magazine, June 2008.
I still wonder if a full sized adult had anymore leg room?
Thanks all.
