A/T Hose replacement how-to
The saga continues. With old MM parts out, I'll be putting in new assundry parts Saturday. During this job, I discovered that the lower A/T flex fluid hose that connects between the metal fluid line and the fluid cooler is seeping fluid. This hose is located at the very bottom area, passenger side of the radiator. The replacement hose has fittings on each end that allow using a line wrench. But the metal line has no such fitting to grab with a wrench. What to use to grab onto the metal line when I'm attaching the new hose? A pipe wrench? I would like to avoid destroying a much more expensive (available?) metal fluid line. Thanks for advise....

I just had mine repaired by my mechanic - when I researched the job, much to my dismay I found that the rubber sections are permanently affixed to the metal sections as one piece - if you wish to replace the rubber, you will need to cut it off and reconfigure. I know Roger had 3 of the 4 lines (this was a few weeks ago, there are 4 lines total from tranny to front and back) all for a pretty good price (2 were new and one was used in good shape IIRC). I didn't buy them b/c my mechanic was able to repair mine (I'm finally leak free under there!). Anyway, see illustration 308-86 in the PET for the diagram and list of parts.

Good to know Ed...I have the flex hose portion due to arrive. If I were to strip the old flex hose off, is the new one pressed (crimped) on? Or is it fixed on by a hose clamp?

not sure, as my mechanic fixed mine. Btw, there is another thread running right now with a similar issue, and with pics, which you may find helpful. You could also call Roger or Jim Bailey and they'll know the answer off the top!

most factory hoses are crimped on if youy have leaking hose and doint mind doing some legwork remove it take it to a hose shop (preferrably with all of the the other hoses and get them all replaced with new hose and crimps)

In my 83 (3 speed) AT, the lower cooler hose connection on the steel line has a male threaded fitting with a hex to hold on it. Same for the upper connection....must have changed for the 4 speed?

ok...does the steel line have a fixed hex nut to counter hold, when removing the flex hose?

Pet shows separate hoses here in 3 speed config, but hose in unit with steel pipe in 4 speeds as far as I can see. The short hose even has a length on it - 135mm, and some of the hoses up the back also have lengths. Note that the return fuel line to the top of the tank (in PET) shows the short hose part in unit with the steel part (crimped on), which means if you order that part you get 6" of hose and 8' of steel pipe....I opted to pull the hose off the existing steel pipe and clip a new hose on - removing the steel pipe is a drop the rear suspension job!
