Default What kind of water pump is everyone using?

I have done a search on the boards and I don't see anyway to get peace of mind unless I change the pump every 25k or 3 years. I just had a recent water pump seizure but I cought it before it broke the belt (made a loud scretching sound), thank god I heard it!! Does anyone sell a decent pump that can last until the next belt service? This failed water pump only has 20k miles on it before it failed. Just for clarification this pump was not bought by any of the vendors here, the PO replaced it at 80k along with t-belt and the car now has 101,512 miles when it failed. Car has never been to the track and was just a daily driver for my fiancee and us to enjoy in the summer. I bought the car at 88k. Seems odd for such a quick failure, but I guess not, after searching on the board...

Now to get a "real" one

I use 928 Int'l or 928 Specialist for a part like this, plastic impeller.

Plastic Impeller eh? I have gotten the impression those do not last as long as a metal impeller.

The plastic impellars are very hard to find anymore and possibly NLA.
Some of my pumps show up with plastic - maybe one in 50.
Check with 928 Int but I dont beleive Mark can get them either.

I beleive my rebuilder is the same as the others and so far no problem at all.
Its the quality of the rebuild that you need to watch. Do not be detered by the casting - whether it is a Laso or Porsche as the casting has no effect on the performance of the pump. The shaft and bearing are the critical items.

I am asked this question every day - metal or plastic - unfortunatly we have little choice anymore.

Plastic or metal impellers I've seen last the same ... the metal one can kill your block. I will never use a LASO, because most failed pumps I've seen are LASO, others here use them with no issues. Why do your pumps fail so often? Is your tension too tight? Most pumps last their service interval.... But one thing I will never do is instal a pump that is not:

From 928 International; Roger; 928 Specialists; Carl; Motorsport Utah; or PORSCHE. Personally I prefer Porsche rebuilt or new pumps, but I'll take a pump from the others mentioned as a good second because I prefer not to pay through the nose.

The plastic impellars do not stay on the shaft as well as the metal ones.
However if the plastic comes loose it does little damage unless you overheat.

The metal tends to migrate towards the block and can in rare cases eat into the block.

Before everyone gets alarmed the % of failures is very small if you add them all up from the posts on Rennlist compared to the number of pumps sold by all the vendors.

The factory new WP is $672 and the factory rebuild is $284 and both come with metal impellers.
My rebuilds are $108.
Even if you buy factory new they fail as has been posted here on the forum.

Sorry Roger, But, unfortunatly as the evil bay inferior castings may get sent back as cores - we DO need to pay particular attention at this point, especially at your end. I am making a point of destroying the pump we will replace this week! The shoulder for the idler pulley was machined to the wrong size among other non-qualities...

Mike,
You are right of course in that extreme case, however the pump would not have been accepted back as a usable core by myself or the rebuilder so there is a double and treble saftey check. And I am sure that applies to the other vendors as well.

There lies a big problem and one I've heard before with pumps from eBay or one of the "V"ery large generic Porsche parts distributors .... that they take an early pump and cut the boss off, tap it and instal a later style shoulder bolt. That, IMHO, is a dangerous thing, because the work needs to be perfect for everything to align and remain aligned ...

I'd go as far as to say that Roger's personal level of attention to detail makes him qualify for an unconditional statement that what you buy from Roger, will be good quality.

The PO put one of these on mine and it made it 15X as far! A whole 1500 miles before it failed. I guess I was one of the lucky ones!

Hi Bill,
Yes I do as long as its a good usable core.
All that is left of the WP after the rebulider strips it is the casting so it does not really matter if it is Laso or Porsche.
Best,
Roger
