Ya jinxed me. Driving to work this morning and I felt a strange "click" in the clutch pedal and then it got soft. Now it looks like my brand-new master isn't returning fully, lots more free play in the pedal before it contacts the piston now. And I think I threw away the old master...crap. Daily driving it for the past two weeks and have been really enjoying how fantastic it drives.

Default Master Cylinder Repair Kit

So here are the parts in the repair kit supplied by Porscheshop.co.uk

No sign of the spring that some people have mentioned.

I'm still not sure how the internals are removed from the master, but I haven't tried yet either.

remove the ribbed boot then the snap ring, the otherparts should be obvious once you have removed the first 2

You can re-use the spring.

I hope its not broken, but I can't see why the pedal would not return unless it were. I've been too lazy to check it yet, but I will this weekend.

I'm with you. The guts of my master are coming out tonight. I was just too irritated to do it yesterday, hoping it's not bad.

The pedal will not return because of the external spring which as you push changes axis and helps you push the pedal down.

I had my the plastic elbow fail on my master a very short while ago, but I had a floor mounted clutch pedal ready to go in. So I mounted that. it is a wilwood product. It decreased the force it took to push my pedal. and it opens it abit more due to the larger bore. It sure does feel better.
Plus I was able to locate the pedal alittle closer to my body so that I can have my legs positioned better for the gas and brake, yet be able to fully depress the clutch.

In my case the pedal returns just fine and comes away from the master, so the external spring is fine. I actually looked and the pushrod is coming away from the piston too far, meaning the piston isn't coming back fully. I'm going to pull it tonight but my suspicion now is the snap ring either broke or got jammed somehow, maybe the pushrod got off center and did it. The boot had come off the master somehow. If it's the snap ring I'll be back in business shortly.

Pulled apart the clutch master, had to extract the piston carefully, all the seals were fine, the spring was fine, the bore wasn't scratched. So I put it all back together with the original seals as the replacements were not quite the same, and put more fluid in to the brake resevoir to replace the fluid that drained in to the footwell, and now it works perfectly. No bleeding required, just worked right from the start.

Default re; clutch pedal dropping

i have also had this happen to me in my 79 euro the first seals in the master were worn out when i bought the car so i bought a repair kit with new seals turned out the new seals weren't the right parts for my master.
It seemed the inner diameter of the seals was to large and was letting fluid past the seals i bled the system way to many times i was getting so good i could do it in the parkinglot at work by myself finally being really cheap i found a couple of small "O" rings to seal up the inner diameter its not the right way to fix it but its been like that for almost 10 yrs now and is still working fine in my other 79 wpo i just bought a new master and swapped out the guts was repaired in 10 minutes i tried changing the whole master once and gave up after about 4 hrs of frusteration i hope my experiances give u some direction

Well mine was something altogether different. The clutch pedal broke, just posted a thread about it. So there are many reasons a clutch goes "soft."

I think the seals have virtually given up now, so I'm probably going to try the ones in the kit again which are marked H1932. Is there anything better available? Or perhaps I should try using the internals, piston and seals, from a new master?

Obviously I'm not going to try to replace the cylinder body itself, life is too short.
