Thanks Steve. Does that plastic piece just pull out or is there something else I need to remove first? I tried fiddling with it, but didn't work too hard to get it off. Does anyone have a good resource for replacing the B2 Band and ancillary components? Do I need any special tools? Are there while you are in there recommendations. Should I just find a good used replacement tranny? Maybe I should move back to Upstate NY .

Update: I was readying and had the 944 out for AX this weekend (see Rennlist sticker/AX photo below/not me in my car) and this did not get to the 722 until this afternoon. Anyway, I did as Steve suggested and pulled the shift lever and the plastic B2 band guide. The band looks fine. The guide however had some broken tabs (little ones) on the top of the guide itself. I ordered a new plastic guide at the MB dealer today (around $7.50).

Could the broken guide combined with the overfilled transmission be the cause of the reaction valve thrust pin dislodging and my forward gears going? I will be putting the lower transmission components back on the trans before I take it down anyway. Any other suggestions before I put it back together? I will be replacing the B2 Piston seals and plastic bearing and have already replaced the K1 valve.

Could the B2 Band just be worn? How can I check that specifically with the trans still on the car and other than visually?

TIA Michael

Thanks to some info and guidance from folks on this board, particularly Tails and Steve C. My MB is back on the road. I just got back from testing it over canyon rides (after a few local trips with fills) near my Dad's place in Calabasas, CA. Since I took a calculated risk and did not do anything more than fix the broken parts and replaced some, I cannot be certain how long this fix will last. I hope a long time.

My thought process was as follows: 1)Money 2)Money 3)Very hard to replace certain seals and such with the trans on the car. If I have to do this again, I will certainly remove the trans from the car and do everything on a bench. Probably would have saved time in the long run. However, doing this by myself in my apt. garage had its challenges.

Turns out the B2 Band girdle was broken (see B2 photo and TRHS right broken tab above). I am not sure the sequence of events that caused the failure, but I replaced the broken plastic piece ($7.53) and a few other parts under $10 and put it back together. The only issue I had going back together was a faulty, non-fitting pan gasket that cost me about a gallon and a half of ATF in two separate reseals (unsucessful).

I will post a parts list and any information I was able to pick up that is not already searchable in this forum in the next couple of days. Thanks again Rennlist. Thanks again 928 peoples. Michael
