Timing marks on each cam gear properly (exactly) corresponded to engine marks with crank at 0 deg. A good sign on this new acquisition.
Rotated the crank nearly twice, to put crank at very very close to 45 BTDC. Marked cam gears with paint (they are approaching their 0 Deg marks, of course). Locked-down the flexplate. Removed the TB.
I kind of expected that one of the cam gears might jump a bit. Didn't happen. They are sitting exactly at the 45 Deg. marks. It seems good, but is this normal? If so, the job is going to be easier than expected.
My plan is to reinstall new belt at 45 mark, then recheck at 0 Deg.
The cams might stay there and or one or the other may move if they move the the driverside may snap advanced and the pass side may move retard, you can see by using the big nut under the cam pulley securing bolt to move the cams to see how easy they turn, with the crank at 45 deg the valves wont hit the pistons, as all of the pistons are down in their bores. How to tell when the crank is at 45 deg ??? The keyway is is at the 3 O clock position.
The rear cam gear notches may line up with the head, but the cams may be way off. Unlike 16V cam gears, 32V gears can move ±1 tooth in relation to the cam. Usually, if the cams are set up properly, one or the other gear notch is off by a bit. That's why they added the large notch on the front of the gear.
You need a 32V'r (or a dial indicator) to know for sure.
