Word to the wise, don't buy restored wheels from Ernie's Alloys
What is it with me and wheels? I am getting the frog ready for PCA Parade next month and wanted a set of new/restored 15" phone dials so I wouldn't have to take the original tires off the original wheels. Ernie's alloys used to run eBay auctions selling refinished 15" phone dials so when I was ready I contacted him and bought a set. What a joke! The wheels looked like somebody who never painted b/f painted the wheels, they just painted right over any dirt that was on the wheels when they started. It was actually flaking off on the face of the supposedly refinshed wheel! There were sanding marks everywhere, one wheel had been curbed so they just ground it down to smooth (part of the rest of the wheel had the original lip with the raised edge). I told him on several occasions before hand they were going on a 1500 mile 928 that was being prepped for PCA Parade concours and had to be perfect. I have plenty of pictures and much communication to document what I'm posting. I have since bought another set on eBay and they are at the painters now to be media blasted and refinished...... the right way!
Given all of the above and that I had very specifically told him what I expected he should have told me he couldn't/wouldn't do it. Worst part, he wouldn't credit my shipping charges so I could send the POS wheels back to him! Buyer beware with this guy.....

Thanks for the heads up, I'm sure many will appreciate this.

I bought a set of forged manhole covers from him, and they were alright, but the ''good'' tires were not good enough for road use. In my case I didn't care about the tires.
Sorry to hear about your experiences. Enjoy the parade.

Hi Mel, yes I am planning on having it at Parade although I haven't heard anything about my registration yet? I have also been invited to the Hilton Head Concours in October so I have a couple of events that I'm getting it ready for. See you at SITM? Not bringing the frog but I'll be in another hot rod sportscar.......

Sorry to hear that Chuck. I hope you get it worked out. I on the other hand am disappointed in the finish on the wheels on my GTS. The paint is splitting in some
areas and the clear coat as well as paint has chipped off in others. Don't get me wrong, they still look great, but when you inspect them closely, you can see the flaws. NOT what I paid good money for. It is inevitable that I will have to get them repainted when it becomes too obvious. Wish I could go back to the guy, but it's like pulling teeth with them and its been over 2 years.
Its hard to trust any of these wheel guys!

Anyone know what happened to him? I've purchased dozens of sets of wheels from him over the last twenty years as well as untold amounts of new tires for everything from my porsches to lamborghinis and various other cars. Always a stand up guy, never a single complaint. RIP Ernie.
